There is no reason you cant keep the factory ECU doing the ignition and fit a piggy back for mapping, I beleive with a Dastek the issues with rev limit are gone but the much cheaper ICON unit is a timing only device and you can get hold of the software to uplaod different maps yourself.
Of course you'd then need to fit a Toyota TPS to the carbs and find a decent location for the MAP.

yeh i did think of just disconnecting the injectors and putting tps on the carbs
but tbh i'd rather cut the loom down and have away with the wiring and move the alternator relay/fuse into the engine bay instead of running all the way to the frunk
i think i'll end up heading down the modified distributor path although as i say idealy i want megasjolt as i think this will come into a world of it's own when ideling is concerned low down on long duration cam's
megajolt only have 4age ignition base maps available and as i say though i'm sure they're similar it's a big wedge to spend and a hell of a punt as if the age map wouldn't run the car i'd have the decision of sell a new unit at a loss of pay for a mapping session
does anyone have a rough idea of what advance an age runs? presuming the distributoor is a 36-1 tooth trigger wheel like the mr2?

MR2 is dual sensor trigger, 1 with 24 teath none missing and the other with one tooth, both running at cam speed. Heard horror stories about noise on the standard triggers though but I dont know if this was with a modified 24 tooth (i.e one filed off) or dual VR sensors which I dont think you can do with megajolt.
Either way its a brave choice going carbs now, its 5+ years since this first post and most after market systems will be chaper than carbs. Carbs are not as effective as they have to over and under fuel at places to make up for high/low port velocities, they are also a bigger restriction in the inlet path.

perhaps brave perhaps stupid lol but i have an overwhelming urge to play with carbs tbh if the cost of getting the ignition sorted properly i.e. megajolt and i'm aware how much idf's and drla's cost i may well be tempted to switch back to megasquirt with itb's (have some 40mm itb's with tps and map already intigrated hence why i want to use the carbs i have with a pikey dizzy arrangement, but trying to get a nissan dizzy (which aparently matches the advance peramiters set by the ecu) is proving quite the challenge.

Carbs would sound amazing but what with the GE having the injectors fitted to the head not the inlet getting ITB's to work should be childs play.
On the original subject, didnt the later GE's have 170bhp anyhow? I would have thought 100bhp/litre would be easy to hit with the size of the inlet ports and valves, a good set of cams, ITB's and an ECU, on top of regular stuff like exhaust and air filter. Stock exhaust manifold is leagues above whats fitted to most production cars.
Could a turbo block be pressed into action as a stronger base for an N/A build or are the pistons much the same? Could the head be skimmed to get the compression up?

Nope should be difficult my father was getting 100bhp per litre in the 60's with 8 valve small push rod engines.

Or start with a BEAMS. Dont they have ITB's as standard? And 210ps.
