Headlight controller repair - 800x600 photo heavy

Post by boyzdad »

Hello
I have been trying to get my car ready for the Tatton show. I needed to get an MOT done, all was well apart from the headlights.....

When I turned them on this happened......

Right up, pause, left up, ok not end of the world, then I turned the lights off.......

Left down, pause, right down, pause, right up 1/2 way, down, up, down then up a little bit, poor car looked like it had been punched.

As I am into electrical/electronics stuff I thought I would have a go at fixing the problem.

After removing the headlight "Retractor control" from next to the wiper motor I set about stripping it down.....

First carefully lift up the 4 tabs fitted to the cover.....

Now slide out the PCB.....

First of all I removed the relay contact covers.....

Image

And then cleaned the contacts.....

Image

I then fixed (re-soldered) any dry joints I found, there were a few.....

Image

And finally mended a broken pin on the connector.....

The problem.....

The fix......

Hopefully this will be helpful to anyone with a similar problem!

Hi cartledge, not too sure were it should go, there is no "electrical" sub section, do I just copy and re-post them? Or should I move them, if so, I am not to sure how to, sorry for being a bit thick :(

Any articles that will help another MR2'er should go there, feel free to post away. if there is no direct topic, just ick one that is roughly similar

Submitted, in the engine area, that's the closest I could think of, an "electrical" section would be good ;)
