refixing door side moldings

Post by jasongtr »

where would i get the sticky double sided foam tape strong enough to hold them properly?

I hope to get my doors back from the painters, but then i have been down there twice to collect them and rejected them as they had orange peel effect, so maybe 3rd time lucky

The missus says google 3M auto trim tape. It's what she uses at work for rebadging and refixing mouldings. :thumleft:

Just make sure you clean off the old cacky tape from the moulding before you restick it.

def go for the 3m stuff its by far the best give it a blast with the heat gun just before you stick them on! and try to get it right first time as it will take a fierce grip.

cheers for that, i guess you cant have it both ways, you need it to stick well and then cant moan about it sticking too well if you muck it up

If it's double sided like what I used on my window blinds then you can stick it to the piece of moulding you want to attach and position it in place at the bottom etc with some masking tape. Then once you are happy pull it forward a bit and using a razor blade peel the backing off and stick as you go along.

blobs of blu-tak on the bottom of the piece you are sticking, so the blutak is higher than the sticky tape.

place item on panel, blutak will give adhesion and the height of the lumps allow you to fine adjust. then just press down pulling the lumps of blutak out as you go!

it's just that we subscrible to the theory of hitting it harder until it works. Or something falls off, in which case you've hit it too hard.

3M VHB is the stuff to use! Used worldwide for signwriting and OEM vehicle trim. It's normally white but if you speak to your local bodyshop (any decent bodyshop should know VHB tape as a name) you might be able to blag a metre or so in black. Needs to be stuck down straight away and the surface de-greased with weak ISA solution or dilluted meths (if you can blag some tape then clean the door with "VHB cleaner" -but I'd dillute it a little with some water personally as it's pretty much neat ISA and can lift some paint finishes).

Used to use VHB tape almost every day -it WILL stick your fingers together if used incorrectly, but it's next to useless if applied incorrectly.

Othwerwise I'd use never set putty bead, forget the name I have on my tub but I've heard it called dumdum putty -but sure that's a different product. You can get most of this stuff from frost or car builder solutions (yahoo them).

Avoid the cheapo halfords type bodytrim tape -it'll just wash-off first time you wash the car.
