Smoothing doors over. Any advice?

Post by Deano2915 »

Doing a bit of a body work overhaul. 20 years is well and truely showing through now. I'm looking at filling in, and smoothing over the doors and a few other fittings. Any advice or tips would be greatly appreciated. I have heard of cracking due to opening and closing of the doors, but not sure how true this is. Cheers in advance.

Done mine about a year ago still no cracking the only advice i will give is to leave the bumpstrips on and fill over the top so as to reduce the amount of filler used less filler= less chance of cracking. As mentned above you will need to do all the strips otherwise it will look naf.

No probs i will try post some when I return home at the end of the week. :thumleft:
If cracking is a concern you could always weld a 2" mild steel strip in the gap instead. :D

Just tried posting a pic but got this message

Sorry, you'll need to post more before you can put URLs into posts

mbland had this done to his yellow turbo as well.

You will need to do something about the strips on the rest of the car as pointed out, and you will want to get some metal welded into where the strip used to be. You want to be using a small an amount of filler as possible!

yeah, i am intending on doing it all round, not just on the doors. The intention is to create some new fittings on the bumpers front and rear. There will still be a line on each of these, but is needed to allow for replacement or fixing. As for the doors and air intake vents, they will be completely smooth, hopefully.

Agreed, some piccies would be great, and i'll get some up as soon as mine are done.
