Hi guys I have a 1995 MR2 NA has failed the MOT on emissions any ideas what this may be?...
Failed on CO @ 7.59%
Failed on HC @ 332ppm
Lambda - 0.97 - 1.03 - 0.79 FAIL
And on Natural Idle test CO was 0.76% max allowed 0.50%
If its lambda sensor how much roughly from Mr T... and would non genuine ones be ok and get me through the MOT?

Well my technician said it seem to sound strange on idle & I have noticed when starting it in the morning the idle seems to hunt.. when you rev it up when it drops back down it drops really low and feels like the car is going to stall! Have noticed it has had this hunting idle when warm.. doesnt happen all the time though.. first time i noticed it was yesterday!
I think its terminals te1 and e1 but I can't be sure the cars at work in bits. you bridge and turn on the ignition and count the flashes.
Could also be a vacuum leak, so check hoses.
Ok I have bridged those connections & turned my ignition on and I get the engine check light flashing continuosly.. flashing doesnt stop either!
Have checked all the hoses & those seem fine
Do i need a ramp for that or can i get to it easily enough without? and where abouts is it located? i imagine must be exhaust area before the cat somewhere?
If I remember correctly it's in the middle section of the exhaust, between the flexi section and the rear subframe. You'll need the car on ramps ar axle stands.
just a bit of an update.. took the car to a toyota dealer in our group (who looked at it for free for me) told me it needs a cat and a lambda sensor to get it through, toyota parts at cost price worked out at like £741 but managed to find a non genuine cat & sensor for a £177 total, having them fitted on saturday morning and then a retest so fingers crossed!
you'll get at least 25 quid for your old cat as well as long as its a toyota jobbie. ring a few scrap yards as not a lot of them take em.(another 25 saved)
Went for its retest today after having the new CAT and lambda sensor fitted.. and it has FAILED!!! again on emissions, car was hot enough and up to operating temperature, am getting really worried now dont know what else to do!
Any ideas would be great
when you say up to temperate, is that just idle running temp... your going to have to take it for a blast! other than that try fuel additive mate, injector cleaner, RON increase, V power the lot and then stick the probe in.
check your sparks too.
i had a N/A few years back, used to fail unless i took it for a blast b4 hand.
Can you post the detailed results again (CO, HC, Lambda)? They might not mean much to me but it could help someone else diagnose the problem.
Have you had your ignition timing checked? It should be 10 degrees with the diagnostic terminals (TE1 and E1) bridged.
Looks like it wasnt hot enough, and your MOT guy is a willy.
Make sure its hot, front fans kicking in, coolant pipes at front to hot to touch, before you take it to them and tell them to do it as soon as you bring it in.

We did try it a couple of times, we warmed it up to operating temp after the lambda sensor was fitted and then when that didnt work the new cat was fitted and we did the emissions test again and it still failed! the engine has been misfiring slightly in the morning from cold but im not sure if it will misfire tomorrow and if it was the lambda sensor that was causing this (which has now been replaced).. Would this affect the emissions if it was missing? I guess the true test is start her up tomorrow and see if she misses until she warms up
It failed on CAT and lambda by the results you have.
HC was fine which is unburnt fuel so spark/timing etc could be ruled out.
Even after the new CAT and lambda a fitted it was only just out, thats normally a sign it wasnt quite warm enough.
MAP sensor may be somehing to check.
Emmissions are pain in the ar$e mate.
