curbed original pepperpot steel rim edge repair?

the day after a fresh MOT, went and ground half the steel edge on the nearside front! sickening crunch.

the rest of the wheel is fine, so, as per title of post, has anyone had the lip edge repaired?

contemplating wheel off, air out, and a small grinder to re- round the edge...

anyone done this?

(quite a good protective anti-klutz idea by toyota btw; most alloys, it would just tear into the soft metal.)

in answer to the questions yes and yes, but as 2nd hand ones are plentiful you could just replace it

I did my edges with a file. Slow and gentle and then wet and dry to shape it. It's quite easy if you take your time.

If you're actually talking about the teardrop alloys Mk1bs wore, a mate of mine has loads of them he's never going to use and would probably let you have as many as you want, if you ask.

I've even got two quite tidy ones without tyres on. I was going to weigh them in since I discovered how much scrap metal is worth.

Call it £10 per wheel, take as many as you want, I think I've got 6 or 8.

How did polish your wheels like that?

I stripped the paint using a clean up wheel on a drill (Link below)

I then used wet and dry from 320 grit all the way down to 1200 grit. Do this until all the swirls in the metal are gone. I found it easier to be really gentle and take my time with the wheel as then the swirls are'nt so deep.
I found that the wet and dry part tends to remove your finger prints for a while and really hurts so the less you have to do, the better.
Next I polished with G3 rubbing compound (alot) then Autosol then a finer metal polish. I used a brand called Peek. The final bit is best buffed with a machine. I just used a cheap one from Argos and it was fine.
The tear drops were then primered (here they are in primer)


and sprayed the colour I chose (Toyota 141) and then laquerd.
Masking tape removed and then repolished.
On my first attemped I laquerd the whole wheel but it looked rubbish so took it off again. Now they a just left bare and polished alot as they show every mark and water droplet.
The centre caps I just kept rubbing with 1000 grit wet and dry until all the paint had gone and then----yes you guessed it, more polishing.

Or you could buy some undamaged rims from aw11rally for a tenner each and save yourself elventy hours filing a knackered rim?
