310mm Hi-Specs Under 15" Wheels

Hi all,

I was lucky enough to buy Rikster's Hi-Spec brake setup, which arrived on Friday, and thought I'd upload some pics. It'd be rude to have them sitting on a shelf for too long!

They fitted straight under my 15" Team Dynamics Pro Race 1.2's... just! I had to remove some wheel balancing weights, so will have to get that re-done possibly, with them re-positioned further inwards. Apart from that they've got quite good clearance actually with only the bridging bolt section of the caliper with a couple of mm clearance. The calipers hug the disc and the clearance to the spokes is like a gaping chasm in comparison.

I also decided to give the arches a quick scrub down and they came up quite well; see you if you recognise the before and after...





The brakes came with part worn DS3000's, which I'll have to see if suit my driving/braking style when I re-tax and insure my 1.5 later this month (hopefully). If not I'll get some Yellowstuff's for front and rears (22V's).

They're fully bled with fresh dot 5.1 and as a brucey bonus the standard Mk1 hoses (already braided style) fit the calipers. All I had to do was release the c-clip from the strut to allow them a couple of extra inches length.

So there you have it, 310mm discs under 15" wheels, spanking!

Cheers Paul... and I thought everything had gone so smoothly. Even the bolts on the old dust shields came out without rounding off! I'll swap them over before she goes back on the road.

The underseal looks in good condition under the arches but I'll give all four corners some Tetroseal and paint up the suspension components as well perhaps next weekend.

I did a bit of reading and there are benefits for running them in either direction but hi-spec advise your way so I'll swap them over.

I wish all wheels were as well designed in terms of brake clearance as the Race Pro's, they are better than even Compomotives in that respect as far as I know.

Regarding the grooves, I would agree with Paul, but very importantly only if the rotors have plain radial vents.

If the rotors have curved vents they become the overriding factor as they need to "pump" out outward, like this:



The reason mfrs "cross" curved vents with the grooves is becuase if they lines them up you'd get a real stress-raiser (crack risk). Annoying compromise to have to make - but safely first!

I do have APs under 15" wheels so it can be done with other setups.

dont think my 15" are anything special clearance was ok with the 310mm just needing a 5mm spacer for the offset.

How do they feel?

I remember trying those brakes when they were on Rik's car (long before he had it) and it locked up all the time on track. Had some difficulty in trying to modulate the braking effectively.

Have you changed the rear brakes?

I've just ordered some POR-15 today rather than using hammerite on all the suspension arms etc. so I'll be swapping the discs next weekend now. I may as well do it all in one fell swoop rather than taking it all off twice. I've also gone ahead and ordered some yellowstuff pads, which arrived the other day, and will fit them at the same time as doing the remedial work plus disc swap.

How do they feel?

Not had chance to drive it except around where my garage is so can't really comment anymore than the pedal feels good. I'll post back when all the above work is completed and the car's back on the road.

Have you changed the rear brakes?

Yeh, the rear brakes are 22V's (mk2 rear) with Mk1b front discs. It has braided hoses all round as well and dot 5.1 fluid. The master cylinder is stock for now but I have a 1" one ready to fit if needs be.

Can't wait to get back in it as I've been stuck driving a 68hp (when new) Citroen ZX 1.9D (no turbo), which as reliable and cheap to run as it may be is no replacement for the 1.5.

I really don't think you are doing your brakes justice by putting yellow stuff on them. In my humble opinion they are absolute sh*t (apart from being cheap and easily available, oh and they last quite well). Initial bite is rubbish and they don't get much better when warm, they just don't fade until the discs are blue and smokey.

For road and light track work I'd highly recommend DS2500 or mintex 1144s. If you plan on doing a lot of track work or you drive very fast on the roads I'd go for Wilwood polymatrix A. We use them on the front of our rally car, they work from cold (maybe due to the huge brakes and light car), the arn't showing any wear after 2 seasons of rallying, they regularly give the co-driver bruised shoulders and whiplash! They are quite simply astonishing. Just look them up on tinterweb and have a gander at the temp/torque curve it is special. Oh and they are billed as full WRC/endurance racing pads which always sounds good down the pub.

Those Willwood pads look interesting and quite suited to sprinting where we need the pads to be at the their best from cold. Was intending to invest in some Carbotechs but for the price of these I reckon they're worth a go first. Are they available to fit stock mk1 calipers and if so do you know of a supplier?

Of course, just as long as you're not expecting too much. My mk1.5 currently has yellows on, simply because I couldn't get hold of anything else in time.

I don't think the wilwoods are available for standard calipers, they are for race calipers.
