Heavy steering Help Please!

Post by baka »

Hi! I brought a nice mkII mr2 a coupe of days ago and love it to bits :D

Rev 4 ukdm na in shiny red ^^.

I have a dilemma though, I screwed up the nerves in my neck and arms in a car crash (bloody 200sx's:mrgreen:) and since then I can't dive cars with heavy steering..

The steering on the mister2 is pretty heavy and I'm struggling to drive it. Is it normally that heavy or could mine be broken?

The system checks and the light goes out, the pump wirrs when you steer, the fluid is correct, the right colour and in good condition.

The steering's not broken pas heavy but it's definitely close to no pas heavy, if that makes sense??

Is this normal? Can I make it lighter some how? I'd love to keep the car as it's frickin awesome but at the minute the steering is just to heavy for me to manage.

Any input appreciated, Thank you.

it is also speed dependance

it is very heavy when power steering is not working, so if you think it just abit heavy then your ps is working

Do you have wiiide tyres in the front? Wide front tyres can make the steering heavier and awful in any car.

Thanks for the replies, no I've got standard wheels and tyres front and back. Out of interest how loud should the power steering pump be? When the cars sitting idling my PS pumps about as loud as the engine. Much higher pitched, but the whine is definitely on par with the engine idling behind me. :? Any ideas?

That's to loud take the cap off and do a few full locks left and right and see if it goes quiet, it should have a noise but its not loud

This morning I turned it lock to lock 10 times to see if their was any air in the system making the steering really hard.

No foam in the reservoir, and the power steering pump didn't get any quieter afterwards.

Once you stop turning the wheel it settles back to a constant whining noise.

Is there somewhere that supplies refurbished pumps? New ones are pretty bloody pricey from Toyota I believe
