[Mk2] [NA] I NEED HELP!!! NO STEREO.. DRIVING ME MAD!!! :)

Post by wlsmith »

Hi guys

I popped into the local halfrauds needing an adaptor for my car.. guy said i needed a PC-2-174 which he supposedly looked up on the computer. Of course this didnt fit, he then said i needed a toyota autoleads one, which was for most models of toyota which again none of the plugs on this one fitted either.. surprise surprise.. so i got both refunded.. went in there a following day and they told me i needed a new stereo to fit it lol, they tried a stereo and didnt work lol (i knew it wouldnt) so that was refunded to me.. Anyway I need your guys help cus im stuck here, all i want is to listen to some music in my car & i cannot at the moment as i do not know what adaptor lead i need and if my car has an active setup or not... it is registered on an M plate which is 1995.. and is a uk spec car.. I have taken some photos of the plug that is currently in the car so this can hopefully help you:

UK spec, and looking at that its not the active system.

When you say it didnt work, do you mean the HU just didnt power on or the adapter itself did not fit?

adaptor itself did not fit... I have only recently bought the car, upgraded my tired auto mk2 for this one which is lovely, the previous owner said it had a DVD style double din unit in it but this was not supplied when i bought the car.

Did he leave you the mounting brackets?

Autoleads PC2-17-4 is the correct adapter for a non-active system. Looking at the pins on your harness there, it looks like you might have the active system?

seems to match up with that.

havent got any mounting brackets to go with it! literally what is in the pic is what I have :) I did think about the PC9-411 but i notice it has RCA outputs.. on it as well? do i plug one part into the white connector plug then and the rest into the back of a stereo? so this means I will more than likely need a new stereo with pre outs for front & rear speakers?

I have no experience with the active system, so I am not entirely sure what is supposed to be there and what is not. Have a look at your loom, does it look like any wires have been cut, joined or spliced at all?

You would need 2 pre-outs, or rather 2 pairs of pre-outs. Have a look behind the seats in the boxes at the bottom, do you have a woofer each side?

If your HU only has one pre-out, you could use an RCA splitter (Y cable) but you would lose the ability to fade from front to rear.

You have the active system (not the premium system which is the JDM version) so you need the adaptor cable with the RCA preouts on it. Easy spot - the non active system has 2 connectors, 1 is 10pin and the other is 6 pin. You CANNOT use a normal stereo with line level outputs (designed to be connected directly to speakers) as there is not a wire in that white connector block that connects to any speakers. They all go via amplifiers so have to be line level (i.e. preouts).

I always thought active and premium were the same thing! So, theres two different stock amped systems?

One's got 2 subs and a DSP unit, the other only has 1 sub. Not sure if it's a revision thing or a UK vs JDM thing or what?!
