[Mk2] [Turbo] Power Steering not working

Post by esty112 »

Hiya,

Just got in my car today and the power steering did not work.

Have a 93 turbo, had it for over a year with no PS proplems.

I know that it is connected to my anti-theft system, so not sure if it is the PS or the security.

When it normally works, you can hear the PS motor as soon as you turn the iginition on BEFORE starting the car.
But now, when I put the ignition on there is no sound and when I do start the engine the P/S light comes on.

Is there a fuse in the fuse box to check (if so where)?

I'll need to take a proper look this weekend, hope its just a fuse :-(

power steering fault

I had a similiar problem last year and it turned out to be a solonoid with dirty contacts, it was recommended that i turn the ignition off and on about 30 times.....I didn't believe it would work :-k but hey presto it did \:D/ \:D/ as it cleans the contacts, so try that first and see if it works for you it's a hell of a lot cheaper :thumleft:

power steering

Well the way I understand it is ...

when the power steering fails due to this problem it's because the contacts within the solonoid/relay are dirty and not making contact properly.

When you turn on the ignition it activates the neccassary relays and creates a small spark within the contacts of the solonoid/relay and if you repeat the action in quick succession it removes the dirt and self cleans the contacts.

And hey presto you have your power steerings back :thumleft:

I hope this explains things and helps :)

All I can say it that this forum has just saved me well over £100 from taking this to a garage and my hours having to wait to get it repaired.

Totally love my MR2, it 17 years old and better than half the Euro car out today!

Thanks you guys
