[Mk2] [Turbo] Looking for a good speaker to drop into the OEM sub box

Post by mr2turbo99 »

Hi all,

is there any speakers that drop straight into the sub woofer box behind the passenger seat?

Heading away from the sub+amp combo as the exhuast is just too loud and its not worth it.

Thanks :thumleft:

IIRC, the MR2 subwoofers are 5.25inch drivers? To be honest, you would be better off with the following:

*Sound deaden the doors
*6.5inch component speakers on a solid MDF mounting
*A nice amp stereo amp to power said components

Is there any speakers that drop straight into the doors without MDF mountings?

Ive got a good headunit which will suffice for what i want to do. Not sure i want to go down the sub/amp route unless i can find a good combo for sale.

I think they are 5.25 inch behind there, so in theory most 5.25inch speakers should fit with little to no modification.

Bear in mind that it would be a horrible location for full range speakers, and not a great location for mid-bass speakers either.

Ive just bought a set of fli Intergrator COMP 5. They were dirt cheap so probably just put one of those in there.

Hmmmm im all lost on what to do now.

What do you guys think i should do?

The Fli comp 5 kit is pretty tasty looking. It has 2 x 225w (75w RMS) speakers and the two Tweeters.

I was planning on banging 1 of the comps in the original sub box but im not so sure now because that would leave 1 comp and 2 tweeters not used.

Should i fit the 2 x 5.25" into the doors along with the tweeters and do away with the OEM sub?

Do i need an amp to do this?

Well im not after a setup thats going to pound out the bass. I'd quite like something thats loud but has a good sound quality.

I just think it would be a waste to use one of the components and throw the rest away hence why i was thinking about putting the speakers in the doors

Well, the Fli's are certinaly going to be better than the OEM equipment, but they arent fantastic. But, for £39.99 (according to Halfords, not checked anywhere else, was first on Google) they shouldnt be too bad.

Most head units arent going to put out much more than 15WRMS, so to really get the most out of them an amp would be best. They would certainly perform better in the doors than behind the seats! Subs work fine behind seats or on one side of a vehicle because generally the Q (directivity) of a speaker approaches 1 at low frequencies, which means it is omnidirectional, so your ears won't be able to hear where the sound is coming from so much.
As the frequency increases, so does the Q value, so the sound becomes more directional and IMO it would be quite annoying to be able to hear mids from one side of the car only!

If you didnt amp them, they should still perform better than the OEM stuff.

If you did want an actual sub, the smallest 'proper' sub I have ever seen is 6inch, and it was a JL item. It probably wont fit in the OEM box, but perhaps it would be possible to fabricate something that would allow you to fit it in the OEM location?

I've done the whole pounding 12" sub in my BMW.

The exhaust in my MR2 is far to loud to justify spending out on a sub/amp setup

ok, so im going to bang my Fli's in the doors, what depth does a speaker have to be when you start considering MDF spacers?

Also could you recommend an amp to run the two components?

Thanks :thumleft:

I would knock up some MDF baffles anyway, it will give a more solid mount, which means less vibration and better low frequency response. Its worth sound deadening, but its up to you if you want to do it as the deadening material can be quite expensive.

How much do you want to spend on an amp?

not much tbh. What sort would i need. I used to have a 2000w kenwood mono amp. That was amazing but obviously way to powerful lol

All you need a is a stereo amplifier and wiring to go with it - I assume the speakers came with a passive corssover, so you need some power cabling, some phono and some speaker wire.

Everything you need to know Re: wiring is there.

Yup came with 2 x 5.25 speakers 2 x tweeters and 2 crossovers. Im thinking i might just stick with running them off the head unit. Not sure what power amp i would need tbh

Well, you can always wire them up as is for now, and if you feel you could do with a more power / clarity, you can add an amp another time. I would suggest installing with an MDF baffle though regardless, and sound deadening around the speaker area would be a good idea while you are there, even the cheap stuff off ebay is decent, no need to spend 50 quid a sheet on Dynamat or however much they are ripping people off, i mean, charging people for it these days.

I used Focal Utopia 5.25 inch mid bass speakers in my OEM boxes, but I never got round to setting it all up, instead went for 10 inch sub behind seat. Peoblem with the original boxes is they arent very big so limited bass. If both are fitted in each cubby hole then its quite a good system as standard, but it just wasnt worth the hassle for little gain

Well i made up some MDF spacers and put the 5.25" speakers in the doors then put the tweeters in the wing mirror bit. Worked a treat and sounds great.

Just need a speaker now for the OEM box. I can't seem to find anyone selling one 5.25" on its own....

Nice one.

They are hard to find, might be worth contacting the manufacturers directly and seeing how much a woofer costs through their spares department?
