[Mk2] [NA] How to find out if the fog lights are the steering lights?

Post by greekmr2 »

Hello guys,

I am going through the list of fixing the teething problems my car has... you know every new owner (like me) wants to bring the car to it's previous glory!! :)

So my front fog lights are not working at all neither of them ... switch on the switch but nada ... nothing. (the switch seems to be incorrect one as it only a on / off MR2 .. UK I think ... ) however the switch shows a fog light and horizontal beams coming out of it ... this usually in all the cars I had indicates it is the rear light ...

However the rear (after market) fitted fog light has it's own after market switch and it is working fine ...

I suspect that someone has replaced the front fog light switch ... but with an incorrect one ... ie if the car had the japanese 3 way switch and someone installed a 2 way UK reverse fog light ... I would assume it will not work.

How can I identify before I order the correct part? :(

OK there is a problem ...
I have the plug attached in the picture on here ...
and then that plug does not fit on the fog light switch (which I am convinced it is for a rear fog UK car) ... I managed to fit it by bending the plastic a bit ... and tried to switch on and tadaaa burned the fuse!
lol

Your switch and plug are consistent with a car that doesn't have steering fogs fitted, I think. I say I think because they are the same as my car, which doesn't have them. You can also check in the frunk, if over on the right by the fusebox and the retractor relay you have another relay called fog ref or something similar.

I think there are two things that say FR FOG on the front boot box ...
One is a relay and the other is a 15 Fuse.

But I have taken a fog light off and it has one plug going into it...

Now I just realised a problem .... when I was testing if the switch will switch on the fogs .... I must have blew up a fuse ... more likely the dashboard backlit fuse ... as my dials do not have backlights and my climate control has no backlit on the numbers!!

Everything is working they just not lit up

Which fuse shall I check :( ????

Yeah I didn't mean *in* the fusebox, I meant next to it :)

The fuse you've blown will be the GAUGE fuse, it's in the driver's footwell fusebox (behind and up from the bonnet release).

Have you checked the FR FOG fuse in the front fusebox? If you have then get a multimeter on the plug that plugs into the foglight you removed, to see if there is power going to it.

Edit: It also looks like the wiring for your front foglight switch has been mucked about with (I see a scotchlock, which is an evil hateful thing) presumably to fit the rear foglight. It'd be worth checking that out too, to make sure the wiring to the switch is still solid.

The fog light fuse seems to be OK I checked it earlier before I realise the dash was off...
will try and check tomorrow about the Gauge fuse. Thank you :)

I've blown that a few times tinkering, it's a 15 and it's the top left hand one in the footwell for sure...
