Going rate for Mk1 wheels?

Post by Kooga »

Following the sad departure of my beloved Mk1b, I find myself saddled with a set of 4 teardrops the new owner didn't want to take....what are these worth these days, i haven't a clue - They're in pretty good, unkerbed nick but could use some paint. 2 have reasonable tyres, 2 are tyreless...suggestions on a postcard..!

TBH they seem to be almost worth less unless in refurbed/polished condition etc

I would stick them on ebay, you might be lucky and get £20-30 Max, I would of thought.

But don't just take my word for it, search ebay for any other wheels and compare price/condition etc.

I've scrapped some as no-one wants them! Only the shiny ones seem worth anything.

Agree with what others have said. Even going back 8 odd years ago, I remember giving away a set for nothing.

there are so many sets out there, ive got about 3 sat in storage. i should think ive got enough mint condition spare wheels to make a complete set haha. so there isnt even a market for them as spare wheels, or trackday wheels, etc.

probably better off weighing them in.

Thanks for the feed back - can probably weigh them in at the local scrap metal dealers given the price of scrap metal these days, though it seems a shame as they're in decent nick (although not shiny).

Well try ebay first then you might get lucky but if you dont after a couple of weeks weight them in

I know it does seem like a crime against MK1s to weigh them in but as more and more cars get broken and new owners opt for aftermarket wheels then there will be (at the momnent) too many std. wheels to go round (no pun intended)
what is pleasantly surprising it the cash offered to weigh them in, I had a clear out of my shed a few months ago, initially intending to dump a load of car/bike & scooter parts in the council run tip, but they were closed so i nipped over the road to a comercial recycling site to ask if I could dump it in their metal skips. Only to be told to put it on the scales Ha Ha £112 quid better off on the way out for stuff I just wanted to dump :thumleft:

I've heard this before. The scrap man is your best bet. Alloy wheels can be worth £10-20 just as scrap alloy.

Aluminium is expensive stuff dont you know.

Yes, I'm quite up on scrap prices at the moment - just had my central heating replaced and I kept all the old pipes, cylinder and rads. Spent an afternoon sorting and cleaning it all up ('clean' copper, aluminium "brazing"-which is brass fittings essentially and the steel radiators), got £454 for the lot....went some way to offsetting the 9k bill

think I was paid about £1 per kilo (though I could be wrong) for the cast alloy wheels i weighed in, mk1 wheels are not light

I sold some about 6 months back for a tenner each. Annoyed with myself now as I could do with a replacement pair now due to a couple of buckled wheels! Grrrr...
But yeah, sadly worth very little. Incidentally, the polished ones from the SCs are pretty worthless too - I couldn't get £50 for set so will be painting two of them probably so that I don't need to much around with getting another set...

with or without tyres? I sold a set with tyres - £166 - had good years f1 eagles with loads of tread of though. Should had kept them really as I now have a runner with the same size tyres and yup...4 tyres is going to cost £200+
