Discussion and technical advice the SW20 MR2. 3S-GTE, 3S-GE, 3S-FE etc
Anything and everything to do with maintenance, modifications and electrical is in here for the Mk2.
Done my first Oil change today... Now I always thought the Japs were geniuses when it came to building cars! So why on earth did they go and put the Oil Filter under the exhaust manifold which is the hottest part of the whole car and one of the tightest!!! And to top it off the bloody engine cover stay uppy thing was getting in the way and I've now got lil burns on my knuckles and fingers! But no doubt a load of you will tell me I'm a pleb and that there is an easier way of doing it, but still Why Put The Filter There!!!... And relax...
i dont think they had the intention of putting the 3sgte in a mid engined car when it was designed
the area you are reffering to gets airflow in the celica
top tip, dont do it when the engines hot
yes annoying to get to the filter on the rev1/2, however even more of a pain is to get to all the downpipe bolts!
Your meant to drain the oil when it's hot plus i always use a flush which you have to put in and run the engine on fast idle fit about 10mins. Never known anyone changing oil on a cold engine!
Who says it's ment to be red hot??
Did I mention i do it in a cold engine?? Nope, lol
Cold starting an engine and running it for 10-20mins on idle is likely to do more harm than good.
I always do it on a warm engine.
Ie an hour or so after it's last use. Not only has 99% of the oil dropped to the pan but it's still nice and thin (running an engine beforehand up to temp lubes the whole engine and will take an age to drain out not to mention any engine part you touch will be 100s of degrees, lol).
Engine flushs arnt recommended from what I hear, especially on old engines. Not necessary.
I've never felt the need or would ever warrant doing any kind of flush.
Regular oil changes is all you need.
In my opinion of course.
you dont want to be covered in 100deg C oil
Get a oil filter relocation kit and all your oil changing troubles will be solved plus your oil temp will probably drop a few deg c
