[Mk2] [Generic] Sony Xplod radio

Post by cvega666 »

Hi,

I want to replace my radio (Sony Xplod, some model) with a different unit with a AUX input.

is it pretty straightforward? does it need any special adapters or should those be in place since my current radio works fine ?

Does anyone have a clear guide on how to get the radio surround off?

Cheers,
J

one more question - At the moment, below the radio, I have the blanking plate which "sticks out" with a Toyota logo on it.
I'd much rather have a handy little storage space there for a mp3 player/phone/wallet etc.
Any idea where can I get one ?

It's called a 'din pocket'.

It is easy enough to swap as you will find as you have a sony you will be able to pull the 16 pin lead out of the back of the stereo thats fitted and that will plug into the new sony as I found fitting a new sony into a 96 car with factory option sony fitted.
You will be able to sell your toyota blanking plate for more than the pocket/tray will cost you http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/UNIVERSAL-CD-RADI ... 255dddbf99

Right. Well that didn't go as planned.

When I got the old radio out, there was indeed an adapter with 1 square iso connector and 4 RCA plugs marked front/rear left/right.
The old Sony radio had RCA outputs on the back so that all worked fine.

The new Sony radio that I bought doesn't have Left/right RCA outputs, just a SUB out - the L/R front/rear outputs are on the ISO harness.

I went ahead and cut off the RCA connectors from the ISO adapter, and rewired them to the ISO connector to the included one following the radio instruction (white, green, purple, etc).

All works fine but it's incredibly loud. As in, at vol set to 6-7 speakers start to fart and almost explode. The radio "BEEP" sounds like a shot from a machine gun in fast forward.
I'm assuming that's because the speaker outputs from the radio directly are already amplified, so connecting that to the subs in the car = no no.

Do i have to chuck the amps out ? how many are there and where are they ? I dont have a problem running some new wiring to the speakers directly, but I just wanna know if that's feasible.

What you need are a pair of hi level to rca adaptors like this http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Legacy-Hi-Low-Lev ... 5638bc4705 or this http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Hi-high-level-spe ... 19c2041a94 which will convert your speaker outputs to rca outputs.
