[Mk2] [NA] Thoughts on amp and components

Post by SonicSW20 »

Considering this little combo:

http://www.caraudiodirect.co.uk/jl-audi ... 2-650.html

First things first - its a fair amount of money so, in your opinions, can I get better for the money?

Second, where would be the best place to mount the amp?

And last, but not least, how hard is it to run the necessary cabling in the MR2?

I have no experience of JL Audio stuff so couldn't really comment on the items in your links but they have a fairly good reputation so would probably sound ok.

You could probably do better on those prices if you shopped around a bit and might be able to get better gear for your money but that's where the research comes in

A good place to mount the amp is in the frunk on top of the space saver wheel. Cut a bit of MDF to fit the shape and it sits in there nicely. Nice and close to the battery so keeps the power cable run really short. This is how I mounted my amp, will get some pictures up for you.

Cable runs to the cabin from the frunk are pretty easy, theres a hole in drivers side bulkhead that's ideal for this. You'll end up with the cables running near the power steering pump though and this has been known to cause interference on some ICE installs. Didn't cause any issues for me and I used this route for my cable run.

Don't skimp on RCA and speaker cable quality as cheap cables can seriously let down a system plus introduce inteference :thumleft:

The JL gear is good but it is worth looking at other makes and listening to them, are you thinking of a sub ?
The amps can be mounted in the frunk (if you dont have aircon there is a nice hole in the passenger side of the bulkhead for the wiring) behind the seats or in the boot which is where mine are now http://www.imoc.co.uk/forums/viewtopic. ... ht=install
