[Mk2] [Turbo] Crankcase excess oil?

Post by r10crw »

So after replacing my turbo which has cured the smoke on overrun I started to set up my AVCR which had lost its settings. So after some high boost runs I find lots of oil over the gearbox, engine oil that is. I have the crankcase vented to atmosphere via a KN filter, no catch can and it seems to be leaking out here. The oil level seems spot on and its difficult to judge how much oil is sitting on the gearbox but looks like a lot. Its dark now but in the morning Ill check the dizzy seals as well.
Checked compression and I have 170 ish on all 4 so really beginning to wonder if a failed ring will always show on compression tests?
Just had the whole lot out to change the clutch so not best pleased but spent the money now and got to get to the bottom of it.
How much oil can you expect out the breather?
Any advice appreciated,
Craig.

As a quick fix you could use anything...a baked bean can...just to monitor the amount of oil and whether you've stopped the prob, surely gotta be rocker box gasket or the dizzy o-ring if it's gathering on the gearbox.
You are sure it's not just excess tranny fluid thats been forced up and out of the breather...as you have just had the box off.

thanks gents. Ill get a plastic bottle rigged up today and monitor it. It could actually be the gearbox as you say, I used flushing oil to clean the engine out so now the engine oil is a lovely gold and cant tell if its gear or engine but must say it didnt smell like engine.
Put a new rocker cover gasket on when the engine was out so it should be ok, dizzy seems dry.
Thanks again,
Craig.

That sounds like blow by and if you still get it, it will be the ring lands broken on a piston or two.

What boost are you running, what fuel do you use and what is your timing set at?

Hi running 15psi, or at least trying too  AVCR is taking a little time to set.
Fuel is usually optimax but sometimes BP 97.
As regards timing I aint got a clue just what ever it was set too before.
Long story but bought the car from a cheat who sold me a pup which Ive slowly been getting useable.
On a plus point I believe that the oil leaking was very little and only to be excess from the gearbox from the breather. Ill let you know as things get worse
Thanks Craig. :D

At 15 psi it would be better to set your timing to 8 deg BTDC.

Something to check when you get the time.

Agree with bob here, Blowby will push oil out from the breather pipe on the bottom/side of the head. (next to no1 intake manifold bolt)

Also. Check that this breather pipe is Raised upward and has plenty of length as if it isn't, oil will syphon out of this due to the angle that the engine sits at (it is infact the catch can drain pipe and not a breather). Better still, block this pipe off all together!
