Been to MR Toyota today

Post by JDM-MAT »

i have been to get a quote on a new thermostat and to see the price on them fitting it.

this is what they said, (please feel free to say if you think its too much or a good price)

part:- £17.00

fitting:- £115

new coolant:- £15

total:- £147.00

this is before my 10% discount from my mkiv supra membership.

this is what they said, (please feel free to say if you think its too much or a good price)

part:- £17.00 fair enough

fitting:- £115 WOAH!!! it's 3 nut/bolts! And under an hour

new coolant:- £15 meh, bit overkill, but suppose they have to charge for using it

total:- £147.00 as second point

this is before my 10% discount from my mkiv supra membership.

If you really don't feel comfortable doing it yourself, then just find a small independent garage who will fit the Toyota part that you've bought for less than half that.

and you trust that MR T will do the job properly just because some dudes called the same name ages ago built your car?

Nothing farther from the truth. In my short MR2 ownership I've seen some serious bodges done by Toyota themselves that ended up in Lukes garage.

As above, don't expect you'll get a "proper job" from them. Its the same as meeting a girl on a night out & expecting her the take it up the number 2 slot, just because you're ex with the same name did.

Spot on. Chances will be that it will be some 17 year old apprentice having a go. Mk2's went out of production 10 years ago and in my experience there will few if any tech's there that will have worked on one before.

Will be no different to any other garage for shoddy workman ship if not worse as they dont need to have a good rep as they will always have warranty work etc

On a side note I went to my local Toyota dealer in my old trueno to buy an oil filter and I was told that it wasnt a Toyota

^^^ Haha the Toyota garage next to where I lived in Germany told me there was never a turbo fitted to the MR2!

To the OP, find a good little garage, or a local friendly member and get them to do it, it's a doddle to do :thumleft:

hahahahah classic!

on a side note : dealers are good to order parts if you really can't get them anywhere else, or really need some genuine stuff.
For repairs, especially as simple as the thermostat, find someone else.

Why do you need to find a specialist to change a thermostat. Any competent mechanic can do it fine. :thumleft:

I'd imagine, to feel safe that said mechanic has carried out the complex MR2 bleed procedure afterwards, as you will lose coolant as a result of the work, albeit not much!

get the mechanic to change the thermostat and bleed it yourself? To be fair that bottom but is a total ar$e to get at you really need to use a good quality 6 side socket to get it off.

Still don't see it as a specialist job. But each to their own.

Neither do I, I've bled mine myself countless times. Not everyone shares our confidence in our own abilities, though :)

Heard of people cooking their 2's due to the "mechanic" not bleeding the system properly and driver not noticing the temp gauge the wrong side of the red!

Am sure a friendly local member could help you out.

I wasn't meaning to do it himself. Just that any decent garage can do it, including a bleed. It's picking the right one is probably the hard bit. I know i'd rather do it myself cos i can and only then have myself to blame if it goes wrong.
