I have been running my timing at 16 degrees for yonks on the same motor as you, it definitly improves throttle response and engine seems to sound smoother and on full throttle the exhaust note changed slightly with a more aggressive growl
Just be aware you may need to use higher octane fuel if you do it or you may get some pinking

i run at 14 degrees. (1991 n/a 3sge)

when i had it at 10 it would pink at wide open throttle, but only a little bit. at 14 degrees it is exactly the same (pinking only at WOT) but throttle response is better.

i run 95 RON fuel and tried 98/99 - not any better so im sticking to the cheaper stuff.

had it dyno'd recently and it was producing 164 FWhp and was well chuffed. everything on the engine is completely standard :)

all new ignition though and new air / fuel filters too. standard exhaust, but since its a 1991 it has no CAT from the factory. its a UK market car, not JDM

i am putting it back to 10 degrees at work tomorrow, i have just set it by ear to stop it pinking.

i need to do a dyno run, anyone know a good place down here? i have a pheonix departure exhaust ( so no cat, running straight of the downpipe, HKS induction kit and ally pipework, new oil, air, fuel filters. all new ignition system should be fun :D

funny you are getting pinking, I have always run 98 octane fuel in mine and it never pinks, I even have A superchips Icon which advances even more at certain rpm's and it just sings
Maybe you need to do a carbon clean of combustion chamber?

i think its a case of every engine being a bit different. pinging sounds could be caused coincedentally by other factors i suppose, or you might not even be able to hear it even if it is.

im going to try a range of base timings between 10 -> 15 to see what happens

I can get mine to pink if I advance the superchip timing too far infact it's stock map was too far advanced since my base timing is at 16 and I had to retard it, also it I use 91/95 Ron fuel it also pinks slightly
I have never dynoed the car but butt dyno is telling me it pulls hard for an n/a , only mods are apexi filter and remus exhaust with sports cat in place because of our strict emission laws in Australia

i tweaked mine down to 11 yesterday. whats weird is that on 11 i can not make it pink. on 10 i can on wide open throttle.

im starting to wonder if what we might be hearing as pinking *could* be the valve clearance shims rattling around?

whats it like on 15? better acceleration? im finding it hard to feel the difference sometimes

Yeah I understand.

But please can we make very, very clear, that you can potentially do lots of damage and destroy your engine.

Don't fiddle with your timing unless you're willing to suffer the consequences.

My rev3 (gen6 celica engine) came with the ignition advanced 15 deg but I will be putting it back to stock when I fit the superchip and then set it up on the rollers.
