[Mk2] [NA] Rev1 to Rev3 Engine?

Post by Norledge »

Hi... i've got myself a Rev1 that owes me £25... engine is coming out to either be rebuilt, or swapped to a different thing...

I don't want to chuck too much money into it, but i've found a rev3 engine (the 180odd bhp engine) for next to nothing locally... my question - is it a nice easy plug an play??

If not is there a simplified wiring diagram? :P

not just plug and play unless you get a few more bits.

Helps to get the passenger wiring loom (saves repinning ECU). You will also need to replace the gearbox mount unless your fitting your REV1 gearbox to the REV3 engine. If your fitting the REV3 gear box your going to have to use your mechanical speedo sender in the box (replace this hen engines out easier)

I take it you have the REV3 ECU?

Some people have said it can affect the Power steering but i have never had that issue yet....touchwood. If you do then you need to cut a wire on the passenger loom so i have been told.

Apart from that its plug and play

I've done this to our Rev1. You'll need the Rev3 loom, ECU and downpipe. There's a couple of power feeds to move in the fuse box and one wire (for fuel pump) to move on the ECU. I can let you know more if you get that far. It is a worthwhile swap though for the extra top end of the Rev3 lump :thumleft:
BTW - The complete 'drop in' Rev3 conversion will be available at the end of this month. It's making way for a V6 \:D/

If you don't have the loom or ecu, the other option is to use the injectors and sensors from your rev1 on the rev3 block.

Mine is installed that way and all works absolutely fine.

You will need the downpipe and manifolds as already mentioned, but the remainder of the exhaust will bolt up.

Interesting... this'll be the easiest way to go then :P

Thanks!

i've just done this swap with a rev2 to rev3, full loom(with fuse box and passenger side part), box, exhaust, ecu... but it wont start. it turns over fine but no spark.
do i need a rev3 coil? is there a wire mod i need to do?

I used the Rev1 fusebox which meant there was a couple of power feeds missing to vital components eg coil. I'm guessing if your using a Rev3 fusebox then this probably isn't the issue, but worth checking the power feed to it any way. We definately had to use a Rev3 igniter (as it had a different connector) but seem to think we used the Rev1 coil.
