[Mk2] [Turbo] LPG!!

Post by daveslater3110 »

Hey everyone!

Just looking for advise/opinions really.

I'm thinking of converting my turbo to LPG. My circumstances have changed abit and im going to college etc etc so running the tubby is becoming quite expensive..so i was thinking of selling it and getting a cheap run about, but i couldn't bring myself to do it! I love this car! So thinking outside the box abit why not convert to LPG and pay half price for fuel?!

Question is, you know how we turbo drivers have to use shell's finest because it burns better and doesn't cause knock etc? How would LPG effect it? Is it doable? Has anyone had it done? If so, where?

Thanks in advance, Dave. :thumleft:

Irrespective of any technical reasons pro/contra I would ask you this: What does it cost to convert to LPG? How much fuel does this equate to and how long would this fuel last? If you're only converting to cut costs for a given amount of time I would calculate the above first :thumleft:

Ok, so the conversion costs £850.

I put £30 of V-power in a week at £1.20 which gives me half a tank (25 litres) roughly so over 12months costs about £1440.

To get the same of LPG, it costs at worst 65p a litre x 25litres which is just over £16. Which is £780 for 12 months.

You might have to help me out now 'cos im all bloody confused.

It would be cheaper per week to fill up, but cost me £1630 in total for the conversion and price of LPG in the first year, but after that i'd only be spending £780 a year instead of £1440 on V-power. Is that right? Hope it makes more sense to u than it does to me, im all confused now. Numbers..arghhh! Lol.

Your maths is correct, sir :thumleft: The question remains, whether you're converting for a given amount of time (you chose 1 year) or permanently.

If you only drive lpg for a year and then return to driving v-power all the time it wouldn't have been worth it! If you drive lpg longer than a year it becomes cheaper than v-power.

Easy as that really :D

I think Paul Woods has/had an LPG converted MR2 turbo.

The only thing to be cautious of is that LPG is so cheap because of a Government tax relief. Once that relief goes, LPG will cost roughly the same as petrol/diesel.

Oh yeah thats easier than i thought then! Got all confused with the numbers in front of me! lol. Well i was planning on doing it until i finish getting my mechanics course finished, which will be about two years.

Plus i use for for a part time job delivering, which is costing me money cos i only get 85p a drop, it costs way more than that. Means the pizza's get there hot though! haha.

So financially wise it's a good plan. Technically speaking would it work? Just spoke to a guy and he said its 110 RON for LPG, which i believe is what Jap cars run on in Japan, am i right?

That's a good point slarty. Hopefully it'll be alright for the next couple of years or so. I heard that was the case with diesel at one point? Now its as expensive as vpower!

Let's just hope ol' georgey keeps it as is for the moment! Lol.

I think it's 5-10% less mate. But i could nearly fill an LPG tank to half a tank of petrol. So it wouldn't be so bad i don't think.

i spoke to Mr Woods about this 18 months or so ago.you run the lpg on general and light throttle soon as you mash the throttle it changes back to v-power he can map it so there is no identifiable change at all just very smooth.not sure why you cant run it all the time (whould be brill having 110 octain at 50% of v-power) but im just saying what he said in the email :thumleft:
