Camshafts - reducing power?? on Turbo Technics turbo

Post by PlasticMonster »

Be interested in opinions here on the above.

I had an engine build a while back and replaced the cams as part of this, when it went back together we could not get the power back to what it was (280bhp down to 220bhp ish).

To address this we added a boost controller (taking pressures to 1.2 bar) and HKS Fcon V pro installed and mapped by Abbey Motorsport (so no slackers). They upped it to 245 but could'ent see why it was'nt getting more. Eventually engine failed due to oil issues...almost beside the point.

I called up Turbo Technics for some advice, as part of this I went through some of the cars issues and was told that the Turbo was fine and then they said that the turbo didnt play well with aftermarket cams (piper fast road) so I should go back to standard to get the power back!

Am I the only one who has ever had this issue or has anyone else found that cams can reduce rather than improve power? Grrrr @ Piper

NB: I have vernier pulleys and they have been set up twice now to TDC (as it was considered the problem a few times during fiddling works).

Piper cams are not really highly regarded. Most folk who fitted them took them out due to not being able to set them up to give any decent power. Plus, they will not of been in the correct place at TDC. They need dialing in correctly to be of any use at all.

If you ran the car out of oil or similar, rebuild the turbo. It will most likely be fooked.

lol, this isnt a sale thread!!

They are 264 I think but obviously piper not HKS.

I say TDC but they did have to dial them to a piper setting following that (its been a while since the build i forget these important points).
