[Mk2] [Turbo] maybe the suspension is knocking and the trim rattle

Post by MR_Cerberus »

hi all i have yet to investigate

is there a common part in the suspension, that wear's out and starts to knock. because it sounds worryingly like loose suspension however the car handles fine no obvious change anyway

also the piece of plastic trim that runs across the bottom of the rear window is rattling in the drivers corner wondered if there's a magic solution that does't involve duck tape

oh its 91 so i think thats rev 1 right

thanks Andy

Droplinks and topmounts are the big noise makers on your suspension...check the topnut is tight and, with the cars front end jacked up,try to pick up the wheel...if it's worn it should knock when you lift it...you just gotta get your hands on the droplink and give it a pulling about...as for the trim noise...lol..good luck...my car has poly-bushed engine mounts that vibrate everything to hell...it's even vibed my spoiler loose!!!

drop links are easy. two bolt, one on the anti roll bar, other on the shock.

Top mounts a little harder. You need to drop the shock out, and require a spring compressor to remove the top mount off the shock without the spring shooting off. :thumleft:

cheers guy 's i have tool's as the last few car's were alfa's just handy to go in with some idea of what's wrong.

however jacked the car up checked and there doesn't seem to be anything a miss in the front. did find the intercooler was loose but its not that and battery too no driven it since i tighten that up. was going to check the rear tomoz. is there a rear roll bar that the links could be loose on.

i carnt make my mind up if its coming from the front or back

i think its the droplinks because it doesn't knock in the corners and if it was the top mounts it would wouldent it?

Does it knock when turning the steering wheel? If so jack up the front of the car, turn the wheels and listen for where the knocking is coming from. Will be obvious if its the topmounts or drop links.

£37.50 off flea bay  bit tight on foldy's at the mo but they seem to be well made and seemed to make sense to get them all round at that price. there better than what was on there. im sure someone will come along and tell me there going to fall off. it only took me an hour and a half to do wheels off to wheels on. the two rears needed to little blow torch action but were off in a jiffy.
