[Mk2] [Turbo] Speedo needle moves on start up

Post by Steve Flynn »

My father-in-law has just bought a rev 2 turbo. When starting the engine, the speedo needle first goes to 114mph, holds for a few seconds then drops to 60 mph, holds for another few seconds then drops to 0mph. Anyone have any ideas? The only thing I can think of is it has a Cliffords alarm with built in turbo timer, but cant see why it would behave that way.

Unplug the speedo sender connector at the gearbox and start the vehicle see if it does the same thing, work your way through the wiring.

There is a short to the speedo wiring somewhere its just a case of finding it.

There's propably speed limit remover/converter installed behind the dash. I have one of these also and it can be selected with a dip switch it it does that on startup to confirm operation. Cant remember the make of it but it bolts directly behind the speedometer bolts.

That makes sense. I have previously owned 3 rev 1's (cable) and 1 rev 2 which had the dial changed to 110mph, so its not something I have seen before. Dont think it is a short as it consistantly does it on start up. Many thanks, I will let my father-in-law know its nothing to worry about.

Sounds to me like the Stef derner de-limiter. What you are describing is a "self test" by the unit.

This can be turned off, and is shown how to in the instruction manual.

It's definitely one of my delimiters.

To switch off the sweep test, get access to the back of the speedo and locate the delimiter PCB attached to the back of the speedo. Find the conversion setting switch. With the ignition on, flick the switch to the opposite position and return it to the original position, turn the ignition off. Next time you switch on the sweep test will be gone.

If you want a copy of the instructions PM me your email address and I shoot a copy off to you.

Digging up an old thread, but at least I'm attempting the search function.....

Does anyone have the instructions for these delimiters?

My speedo stopped working a while back, and seeing this thread made me remember that mine used to do the test procedure, but now it doesn't.

I've ordered a new sender, but before I go changing that, is it possible that the speedo converter has gone wrong as I no longer get the test sequence?

just have this niggling thought that if I rip out the wiring, then the car will never get out of the garage again.

I have known only one go bad. Stef's Delimiters have been very reliable.

Ta. I think a speedo would be nice, just so I know what speed I'm doing when the wheels start juddering (balancing I think).
