Lowering Springs advice needed

Post by mrRobbo2 »

Im thinking about dropping my rev2 NA about 25mm-30mm

What would people recommend for this? im tempted to go apex!

no body kit fitted and I currently have 17s on 7JJ width 40 profile all round. Am I likely to cause problems?

Will the standard shocks take the springs? Coilovers just wont be happening sadly.

Cheers

Yep, standard shocks will be fine...it just might reduce their lifespan slightly.

For -30mm and a comfortable ride, Apex springs are the way to go. Very nice price too :thumleft:

If the top mounts havent been removed yet, i'd be prepared to buy some quick. They tend to rust never to be removed again without knackering them. Also you need a grinder to cut a section out of the bracket that holds the brake pipe, to save you having to bleed the brakes afterwards, and spring compressors will be needed to get the rear shocks out without taking off the drive shaft. Heat up the drop link bolts before you try to remove, as they wont like coming off, use a good quality allen key set.

If you get one of them little gas blow torches (careful of the brake and ABS wires/pipes, then the nuts come off ok.

Somes plan-b may come into effect if that fails.

Not sure there's a need for angle grinders etc, I thought the brake line is held captive on the strut by use of a removable tab that slides into a groove in the brake line fitting. Just knock it out with a screwdriver and light hammer. Then no need to break into the brake system.
I've no long term experience of my springs but it hasn't seemed bad at all in the few short hops under tow O:)
I have PI springs which are progressively wound and give the car a great stance, also doesn't make the car ride like a roller skate, even with 18's on it. I have photo's but I have the slowest intenet connection in the worl while offshore.

Uglee is correct about the tab,not easy to see with years of crap on it but a screw driver and pliers should pull it out.

Don't get G max springs, mine came with them and are advertised as -30/40 mm drop, nope looks standard to me so I will be changing to Apex when I have the cash :thumleft:

Tab comes out but the bracket is square with a hole thru the middle.

The tab is there to secure the pipework. Pipe needs to the unbolted, unles someone has already cut the bracket up.

Guess it depends on the garage, you should ask for a quote first.

Shouldnt take longer than half an hour a corner with garage facilities.

They may come back to you and sell you drop links and top mounts as they "broke" or not "fit for the purpose" when they removed them when you get the final bill.

Just a heads up.

I have Apex springs and gives car a good stance. I find them very harsh though on rough roads. I requested the spring rates from Apex and they are:
Front 50n/mm (286 lb/in)
Rear 42n/mm (239 lb/in)

Firstly Im slightly confused as to why the frons are harder than rears?
Second these seem massively hard compared to other aftermarket springs?

Be prepared for the drop to not be too impressive in looks. If your still on original springs they'll have sagged a bit over the years and of course the 2 got lower as standard over the yrs as stock. After market manufacturers could be quoting from a rev1 ride height. I think but am not sure rev2s may have been lower but it may be from rev 3 on? £20-25 per droplink from good affiliates, but over £100 each for standard part!!, £40ish per top mount (do in pairs & consider TRD, cheaper I believe than standard part)

R.

PS. Where are you fella, plenty of good affiliates who could do the job and if you're reasonably close it's probably worth a wee drive.
