Insurance options

Post by doctorgspot »

Hi all,

Just a heads up for people who may want alternative insurance options. I have just managed to get my standard UK model mk2 rev 5 insured for £190 aparantly all mr2's are classed as classic.

How?

If its only used low mileage you can get this on classic car insurance!! Bonus. Ive just saved a fortune by going this route. Yes its a second car so i only do a few thousand a year in it. Bue im sure their are others out their that have the same setup. This is something that seems to be kept rather quiet. Best of all i dont have to use my no claims discount on it either!! yes im 36 but one company wanted a stupid amount of money to insure me. My renewel quote from esure was 370 quid which wasnt to bad. With 11 years ncb. But now im a very happy bunny!!!

That is the important distinction. You must have another car although I cannot remember if it is another car registered in your name or just use of another car (I own a mondeo as my daily drive, registered to me)

And the 2 key restrictions are limited mileage (as you mentioned) and you don't get the driving other cars extension which is fairly standard on comprehensive policies. There are other differences dependant on which classic car policy you have though. And some Insurers still have a minimum age (I think all MK1s are ok but not later MK2's). And I don't think MK3's are in it at all but I could be very wrong.

Which company have you used, as SKY were not at all interested in classic insurance for my '2.

It is very limited miles and a 2nd if not 3rd car - but very modded.

Thank you for trying us.

Is the reason why we couldn't put this on a classic scheme.

I had rather a shock the other day when I went to re insure my mr2 with elephant, as some of you no the car has been off the road nearly a year now, I recently got a renewal quote from them a few months back the price was 650 as I'm 23 and have 6 years no claims bonus, so I phoned them to find out my insurance has gone up to nearly a 1000 pounds an there was no reason given for this to say I was shocked was an understatement as when I first bought the car I was just 19 with only 2years no claims I was only paying 800odd with the same insurers on the exsact same policy how can this be? What classic car insurer company are out there? Unless you can give me a decent price oli :)

Insurance company is footman jones

Post by doctorgspot »

Hi folkes,

The insurance company i ended up with was footman jones. Now i did this by first going to adrian flux. They couldnt help but passed me through directly to anothe company. Now this may be an arm of theirs. Call contacts i think they mentined. Sorry i wasnt listening close enough to them when they passed me through. But they did the legwork and passed me onto that company. In fact i did very little and its possible you may get it cheaper elsewere.

The comments about not being allowed to drive anotehr car on the policy is true. But as i stated its a second vehicle just for fun. My main car will now be fully comp using my full no claims that i dont have to use on the mr2 now. Thus meaning i can again drive any car. Which i very rarely need to do anyway.

As for the mods side i guess each companys policys are different as they are under normal insurance conditions. im sure the prices probably vary in the same manner too.

But if i can help just one other person save a chunk of cash in the same way as i did the jobs a good one.

well since it's a classic policy you don't use your no claims bonus, so i am using my NCB on another car, give them a ring, you'll be very surprised :):)

i couldn't believe the price, the only thing is you have to pay the whole amount, you can't pay monthly :thumleft: :thumleft: :thumleft:

oh, just to add, although they don't use your NCB they can"store" it for you, so it doesn't become invalid after 2 years :)

Ah sorry, i'm pretty sure you have to be 25 with classicline, this is the case with most classic companies, although, my very first car was a MG midget, I had that on a classic policy when I was 17, so there are companies that will do it:) oh, give bell direct a try as well, that who I used to go with before I went on a classic policy, them and sky have been the cheapest i've ever used:)

thanks for the help on this sheppy youv been a great help, but i persisted with it todayas you mentioned 99% of the classic insurance companys dont want to no if your under the age of 25 i was going to just throw in th towel and pay what elephant wanted but decided to give adrian flux a try, i nearly fell of my chair when they told me the price, it was £465 without using my no claims bonus that covers me for euro break down cover and also euro insurance cover including windscreen damage, side window damage, key loss, a free hire car for upto 6months etc etc, so happy i got the price down as thats a big sum of cash that is going to go towards more mods for the 2 good times :D
