No Spark

Post by alan wheeldon »

MR2 turbo 1992.

This seems to be an intermittant problem. The car will turn over fine but im not getting a spark.

ive tried the following:

coil ok
power to coil ok
igniter ok
HT leads ok
spark plugs ok
IGT igniter signal ok
fuses and relay ok

I really dont know what else to check :(

You havent mentioned it but i assume you checked rotor arm and cap as well?

Are you getting any spark at the coil?

Are the earths ok? Could try checking the relay earth and the ignitor/ coil metal frame for corrosion.

I have not tried the relay earth. The ignitor frame is rust free and has a good earth.

I noticed last night that I cant check for error codes now. There is no management light on the dash anymore. I checked the bulb and that is fine. Could this be related or yet another problem?

This sounds very similar to a problem i had on my old tubby - the management light would not come on and the car would not start. It faded in after around 10 seconds but the car still would not start. It would finally start, seemingly when it wanted to.

My ECU fuse also kept popping, which said to me i had a short somewhere.

Have you checked power to the ECU?

have you tried checking the ecu fuse ?? when mine wouldnt come on usually the fuse blew thus making the car not start..

if the ecu light does come on and the car doesnt start you tried another ecu ?

my rev2 tubby used to this aswell light used to fade, because my boot used to leak water and messed the ecu up eventually the light stopped coming on even if the fuse wasnt blown, i fixed the leak and another ecu sorted my problem now the ecu light comes on everytime :thumleft:

Hmmmm, I have checked the ECU fuse (the one in the engine compartment) and that is fine. Tried my spare ECU and still no joy :?

just tried the voltage at the ECU between E1-B+ and E1-B1 terminals with the ignition on. I only seem to be getting 2.6V as appose to the 12V I should be getting.

BATT-E1 is 12V

Could this be the problem? If so how do you fix it??

What did you guys do to qure the problem :?

The problem was the +B and the +B1 cables to the ECU.

I wasnt getting 12V to the ECU which in turn wasnt powering the ECU up hence no spark.
I have ran a temporary wire fron the battery +12V directly to the ECU terminals and she fired up straight away. Just need to sort out where the original wire is broke now :thumleft:
