[Mk2] [Turbo] From bad to worse...New block needed

Post by Wingers »

The other day I thought my headgasket had gone when the water temps suddenly went to 130deg so I checked the plugs and found one was noticably wetter than the others. In the end I took the head off to change the HG but when it was off I found that combustion chambers 1-2-3 were quite badly damaged where something had gone through the engine and 4 had some light marks too. As well as that the cylinder bores had some (fairly light) scores down the cylinder walls so I decied to take the block out of the car and get it rebored but having now got the whole lot out and stripped down I've looked at it a bit more closely and found that the HG was fine and it was in fact a crack in cylinder 3 that was the cause of all te steam and coolant temps :(

Does anyone know where to get hold of new blocks?
It seems that a 5s block would probably be the best option but I think that could be tricky to get hold of as I'm on the wrong side of the pond for those. Failing that then maybe a rev4+ as at least those are thick-walled.

Rev 1 and 2 blocks are the best, certainly better than later rev 3 blocks.

I think the rev 2 blocks, and some of the later rev 5 blocks have the thicker cylinder walls (but not all of them).

You can get 5s blocks on this side of the pond mate- so well worth a look.

Sorry to hear about your issues :(

I was told by a guy who has tested enuff blocks to have formed a pretty accurate opinion that it's all bllx about thicker / thinner blah blah and that it's more likely to be a good or bad one due to the conditions when it was made...he advised me that an older one that has been about longer and has done all the heating up and cooling down and even been kicking around in a breakers yard would be a more stable block as it has already stood the test of time...to pull 300 plus bhp from a tiny 2 litre engine thats prob 10 to 15 years old is pretty amazing anyway...

theres a lot of talk about it all on most of the forums. Theres a thread on the us oc that claims to have cut open a number of blocks and found the 5s to be the best option. So far I've only found a few 3s options but can't seem to get hold of a 5s.

Yeah I think the 5s blocks were only ever sold in the states and japan.
I'm trying to find one at the moment but it's a lot harder than finding a 3s-gte. I guess they were imported in a lot higher numbers.

Sorry to hear about this mate, after you had such success building and mapping it all yourself :(

It might be worth talking to Paul Woods, I know he gets deliveries from Gouky in the states from time to time where there are 5S blocks aplenty.

What engine is in the UK 2.2L Camry? I always thought that it was the 5S-FE.

There's a 2.2 Camry with the chassis id SXV10 produced for the European market from 1991 - 1996 with the 5SFE in it. It was produced in RHD which I would presume was for the UK.

There's also a later Camry with the chassis id SXV20 as above. Like this one I guess: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll? ... 0469219026

I didn't realise that there were any uk Camrys with the right engine but it seems you may be right.

That's another option to look into then cheers.
