I was thinking of changing the std dash bulbs for LED ones. I've taken apart the heater control main unit and that just has one bulb in it (apart from the LED in the switches) which is a std blade fit with a green rubber coating on it which could easily be changed to an LED one. I've not taken the dash clocks apart yet but I have a spare one in the garage ready so I don't know how many std bulbs are in there, I guess two.
But I've just found this. Looks and sounds interesting. Anyone seen it before or even got one installed? Not sure how the kit works, if it is just a replacement bulb or two or loads of extra bulbs as it seems to suggest. http://www.car-mod-shop.co.uk/Full%20LE ... 0MR2%20MK1
for 9.99 it might wwell be worth a try..
in the back of the mk1 dash is the same as the heater matrix.. several lamps with green plastic over them...
try it and let us know how it goes
i fitted some blue LED's into my dash
Got them of ebay for less than a £5
but when they arrived the units were smaller than the original prob from a mk2.
but all i did was remove the bulbs from my original holders and soldered the new leds straight in.
I was interested in doing this but I haven't got the patience to take the dashboard apart and I would be worried about not being able to tell if I had my full beam on or not as the two colours would clash.
Looks okay though.
I did this recently as well because I had to take out the clocks to replace the oil pressure guage anyway (long story). There are 3 bulbs behind the dials and I had the same problem, the ones I bought (4 for £4) were smaller, so I did the same thing and soldered them into 3 spare holders.
Remember that LEDs are polarised and bulbs aren't so they only work one way round - the upper connection on the MR2 circuit card is +Ve.
Not too much of a problem with the high beam Mulaz because the high beam lamp is much brighter.
Ive done this too, not as bright as that pic but enough. Its 3 t5 (or is it t10?) wedge bulbs and as already said they only work one way so if it doesnt show just try the other way. Taking the dash apart is a doddle, even I managed it
Car mod got back to me and said their kit does the whole dial binacle like mulas. Which I must say looks the biz. They can supply led bulb for the heater control if I tell them what bulb it is. I still have the old heater control and would like to do all led as the one I use most the screen and feet is out.
I was thinking of doing blue for speedo and red for revs. Would that work or would I end up with patches of blue red and purple?
You'd also have trouble focussing your eyes on the dash with a mix of red & blue illumination - your eyes can't bring blue and red to a sharp focus simultaneously due to the difference in wavelengths of the light
Also got myself a Blue LED interior dome lamp also called festoon lamp off Ebay for 99p.
I did have to wait for 2 weeks for delivery from Hong Kong but for the price well worth the wait, check the size beforehand as my lamp was longer in length and i had to adjust the metal contacts with some long nose pliers after disconnecting the battery.
it gives a lovely blue glow and also will not drain the battery if accidently left on.
