Re: V8 Mk1 6 speed with power steering

Post by PW@Woodsport »

Every brake pipe has now been made and fitted to the car, the front brakes are 100% complete now and i only have the rear calipers to mount.

The rears are 22v Rev2- mk2 calipers on Mazda RX8 front discs that are 323mm diameter and 22mm thick. The discs have been drilled as per the fronts and a 54.1/72 spigot inserted to keep it all hubcentric.

I plan on using 10mm thick steel to extend the rear caliper mounting brackets, again i've done this countless times in the past with perfect results.

After the rears are done i can quite literally bolt a seat in and test drive the car \:D/

So what does a Mk1 V8 dashboard actually look like? Well we can't use the original speedo which is cable driven and i've no provision for that on the Audi gearbox, and i wanted real world digital figures of what my engine is doing rather than needles pointing "over there". I also wanted extra info as well so i have been busy making this cluster.

It features a Koso RX2N+ unit to handle RPM, speedo, odometer, fuel gauge and all of my turn signals etc, plus it does a shitload more stuff i can't remember, folks usually mount these on motorbikes, but i thought it would be pretty cool on this car.

The four corner digital displays are oil pressure, oil temp, coolant temp and volts (the video chopped my description, thanks windows movie maker!)

Beside the Koso is exhaust gas temp with programmable alarms/memory recall etc and a matching fuel pressure unit is going below that when it arrives. I am also mounting my Lc1 wideband gauge on a pod along with some other widgets.

And yes, it still needs work, i want a chrome bezel for the Koso unit, any idea how i make that? The shower curtain rings look great on the corner gauges lol i just need to add oil/water/volts symbols to those displays.

that doesnt include your labour time either!! il bet its a £15k car by the time youre done (so more like £20k to a customer?). thats what it costs to do things properly though, the outlay is always worth it for the end result. if we were all bothered about how much money we spent vs the end value of the car, then none of us would be owning AW11's. what else could you buy for that kind of money that would have anywhere near the fun and performance of what this car will end up with?

Yes Jim we were debating wether to include labour in the build cost, but can you count that in a personal build? If i booked it as a garage job it would be roughly 200hrs @ £50/hr= £10k

As you say this sort of project is never built with cost in mind and i sort of justify it by saying i don't drink or smoke and it's my hobby.

For £10k i'd probably buy a well sorted Westy/caterham or maybe an Elise, but then i think they aren't what this car is even if they are faster....

Just an eye opener when you add all the bills up!

That was a second hand price, its Koni inserts on modified Mk1b casings with Mx5 coilover spring kit and Rallydesigns helper springs.

I have no idea what they will be like though.

Do coilovers have to go on the std strut? If not where do you connect your drop link to?

I'm not sure i understand the question mate? Coilovers don't fit the standard strut, i've had to remove the spring pans and weld on my own heavy duty spring perches for the coilover kit to sit on, so my droplink mounts are all as before.

Update on the build...

I made my dash Koso unit bezel, i basically got some round bar and spent a while shaping it to go around the clock, welded it together and filed it smooth. I will either use a good quality chrome spray or have this bezel chromed by a specialist.

I'm pretty happy with this, it still needs more work though.

My new caliper decals arrived, painted and attached to the caliper, many thanks to "Idontknow" on Mr2.com for making these, they are the perfect finishing touch for my brake conversion.

Yeah we named him Alfie because he's keeping a close eye on the project

He's a handful Lauren, you know what puppies are like, chewing everything in sight and i've had to buy two of everything for home and the garage, two beds, bowls, toys etc! There's no way i could leave this little fella at home on his own during the day but he is a huge distraction.

Back to the project, i have been thinking that tyres and monitoring what they are doing on this car is going to be important, so i bought a TPMS (Tyre Pressure Monitoring System).

Image

Image

This unit gives a constant live stream of actual tyre pressure on all four corners and tyre temperature, it has programmable alarms and you can set your hi-lo levels for both temp and pressure. It refreshes every 3 seconds with new data from the tyre and works completely wirelessly, once you install the sensor inside the tyre it has a 7 year battery life. I think i will build this unit into the dash somewhere and the tyre temp function should be especially useful on a car like this.
