Rust repair and arch replacement

Post by rayroocroft »

hey guys

just got my mr2 yesterday and now investigating to see where I can take it to get repaired. I live in clitheroe lancashire, near blackburn.

The rear arches, well the drivers side aint bad, but the passengers is really done for and requires pretty urgent replacement. I am going to get a new drivers door to sort that out but where is the best place price wise to take my mr2? i dont mind travelling. many thanks!

Can't help with a bodyshop recommendation I'm afraid but welcome to 2 ownership fella. It looks a very original 2 as well... 14" wheels, amber indicators, interior.... very nice. The door you should get from a breakers (check here in classifieds though you may have to wait awhile to find one in the right colour) or just get any door (you could get one from a later car which included side impact protection bars) and have it ready to be sprayed with the arches. Spraying down here would be say £100 for the door and the same for arch work on one side but may be cheaper your way. I'm sure someone else will be along with tips there.
Meanwhile enjoy the 2, mine has just over double the mileage of yours and is a fraction older but drives better than it ever has so yours has plenty of life left. Oh and they're alot of fun. Congrats on the buy.

cheers for the welcome mate :) it feels practically new to drive, just had £1500 spent on all new parts and everything!

fortunately i have a few people i know who will do a full respray for £300/£350 mark, so its a case of sorting the little rust bits and maybe get a rev 3 light setup at the back etc before going to the sprayers.

im after a different wheel and a filter/exhaust combo, any you recommend for relatively cheap? as you can imagine all my money is going to restoring her first as i want her spot on before tinkering but investigating for the time being :) many thanks!

Hi,

Unfortunately, if there is rust on the surface somewhere, it probably means that there is lot more hidden. Car might be already beyond repair. Behind the rear bumper is usually the worst spot, so take off the trunk lining and check the seams between the wheelarch and the body. Also, check both rear corners. There might be some real nasty suprises there!

Ask me how I know this? I just had 150 hours of welding done, both rear arches replaced, everything behind the rear bumper practically rebuilt from scratch, both sides under the doors redone, both doors replaced, front fenders replaced and the whole thing repainted.

I hope I got it all...
