Heater was blowing cold for a bit today, hope its not the pipes from hell.

Post by fizz »

Started the car and driving to work and normally by the time i hit a certain area the heater should start blowing out warm air but none today. It was ice cold for ages.

The water temp needle started to increase up and then fluctuate for a bit as i was heading towards the motorway which worried me. Then randomly the blower threw out hot air and the needle stabilised where it normally sits half way on the gauge.

When i get a chance i will be checking the coolant levels of course but just wondering what suggestions you have apart from the usual drain and refill the coolant and change the thermostat.

Cheers

could be a leaky rad mate, park the car on a slope (facing down) and check afier a while for a telltale water stream on the ground from the front driverside. happened to me on a G limited N/A i used to have.

 it's not the HG :thumleft:

sounds like low coolant level problem though somewhere

Will try that later... i checked the overflow and it was empty and then i added some more coolant from the rad cap and didnt have to put that much in maybe a 1/4 litre and it rose to the top. There was no mayo under the cap but when i added the extra coolant it came up fizzing even though the car was cold and i had just started it prior to pouring it in.

dont know what that could be about? :-k

Could be an air lock, if you rev the car when its up to temp does the heater suddenly blow hot air?
I doubt its the pipes from hell, I've had mine done at huge expense as I was told these by a Toyota tool/fitter and it turned out to be a lose hose spotted by proper mechanics.
If you're concerned it might be the pipes then take off the under trays and check em out. It will be easy to spot a leak with the car up to temp.
Toyota charge upwards of £1000 for replacement pipes fitted, an independent I'm guessing will charge 5-600 but as I said its more likely to be an air lock or screwed rad, rad cap, water pump, thermostat or simply a lose hose. All these need checking 1st.
