Replacement key advice

Post by widster »

I went to open my car the other day and the key bent in the drivers door lock. I managed to wiggle it out so no problems there other than i want to get a new key cut. I would also like it to be as original as possible. Do i assume that the best (or only) place to go to is my friendly local Toyota dealer? Thanks in advance.

Most key cutters will be able to make you a copy of the key, only Toyota will charge you a ridiculous amount of money for the privilege.

You may be better off getting a Toyota style blank off ebay and taking it to a key cutter. :-k

Nice idea. Didn't think of that. How did people manage before they had forums, especially one as helpful as this! :thumleft:

Think i'll give the stealer a ring to see how helpful they are and how much they will charge.

Just spoke to Farmer and Carlisle in Leicester. The bloke wasn't that interested and advised me to go to a locksmith. When i said 'so you don't cut keys there then?' he said they did but he didn't think they'd be able to do so as the car is too old. He then reluctantly agreed that if i take in the details i have they will see what they can do but would be 'about £25' and that is for one key only and i could do with 2. Not that helpful then. :-k

Coo! Can't remember what I was quoted (ages ago) but it was a lot more than that.

Consistancy, 'tis what I like to see. #-o

Toyota dealers in Kiddlington near Oxford are superb the guy really knows his stuff they never cut my keys there they sent them off and I had to pay the postage etc they allways give me at least 10% discount cause they like my car

It took only a few days they called me I went down and includeing VAT/post etc they were £9 each \:D/

Its great having brand new gear made by Toyota for a Toyota I think some dealers are just p1$$ takers but I seem to be very lucky, when I go for a part I dont even need to give a chassis number.

I had the original key number so it was real easy for him though.

The Toyota dealer in leicester can be abit of a joke sometimes.

I got mine from a market place in town. Its the same shape and style as the original key. I also had a flat key (no plastic) made for the spare as it can be stored in a wallet easier.

I have had good and not so good experiences with the dealers in Leicester. I suppose it depends on who serves you. I think most of them are automatically programmed to lose interest as soon as your car is 10 years old or more. There always seems to be a pause on the phone and they get a bit ruffled when they ask what year and i say 1987. Computer says no! 8-[

I will look out for a key blank and maybe try the market in Leicester next time i'm in the city. :thumleft:

Its not the computer
Its the prat at the desk

In my Toyota dealer the chap turns the screen around and shows you the bit even if you dont have the part number, Its a big dealership and the parts have thier own entrance and waiting room but at the desk is the monitor and the chap really is on the ball,

A mate of mine has just finished restoring his mk1a n/a auto tin-top RARE  and got loads of stuff from them they even got a BRAND NEW manifold from Japan with the sensor for £100  yep £100 he has replaced all the suspension ALL of it with new Toyota parts new wings new sump new calipers etc etc etc, He has spent a fortune BUT they were giving him upto 30% discount cause of they sheer amount he was buying

I buy all my service items there, they are cheaper than Halfords for genuine parts :thumleft:

For example I needed two exhuast gaskets £3 (pair) yep, get them for twice that on ebay #-o

I bought a complete caliper seals rebuild kit for a whole car £68 :thumleft:

I drive through Oxford quite a bit. Next time I need some bits, I might get them ordered from there and pick them up on the way through!

I do agree with Chris that its the guy on the desk who is to blame. My local dealer in St Ives almost sounds suprised that I want to buy parts for my car and then fit them myself. In this day of scrappage schemes and where people buy a new car just to have the new numberplate, I guess the parts guys are just service receptionists and only expect people to book their car in for service/MOTs.

I'm about to replace all the nuts, bolts, and washers on my exhaust and manifold so I'll phone a few dealers(including Oxford!) and post up the results...

If you have a slightly bent key is it worth getting a new one cut from it or just ordering a new one off of the barrell lock number? Is there a massive difference in price?

I was also thinking it would be cool to have one of those flip key ones (hopefully with two buttons where I could somehow put my alarm internals in it) like so...

Has anyone order this sort of thing from Toyota and would they allow you to?

i ordered two new key blanks for my car. then took the them and had them cut in the high street.

the main key is part number T90999-00128 12.05 EXC VAT
or T90999-00212

the top number is from my invoice from toyota. the second number is from the packet, the key came in?

and the valet key is T90999-00094 8.95 EXC VAT

the valet is for a jdm car and is slighty different to the uk one. it has no plastic top. but still works fine. i.e does not open the boot or glove box.

sorry that's unclear, how did you select type a or type b key?
It could be helpful if you make a photo and give the part number what you bought, than i can select which i need.

Thanks Daniel

The top two part numbers are for the same item the master key which has a plastic top

The bottom number is for a secondary (valet) key. which does not have a plastic top and and will only operate the door and ignition.
