[Mk2] [NA] Locking wheel nut key sheared

Post by cam »

Just failed my MOT on a few things, then to top it all I had to use a strong back to slacken off my wheel nuts, cracked the normal nuts no problem but when it came to the locking nut the key/adapter sheared, I now have 4 wheels stuck on the car and brake work to do.
Anyone know how to get the locking nots off without the key? it is not the type that I can hammer a socket on as the nut is female and the key male.
If I was to get a new key it would probably just shear as well.

Few options I can think of but will all depend on the locking wheel nut and design of wheels for access.
I would probably drill a series of holes on the nut (being careful not to drill into the stud) and then split with a sharp chisel.
Or you could have a socket welded onto the nut and use that to turn.
Another thing to do is to order another key but use a blow torch to heat the nut and apply a load of plus gas/wd40 to get it moving.
Theres a few options to think about, sure theres more.

They work well as long as the nuts aren't recessed into the wheel. They have a reverse thread inside them, so while you are turning them in the direction that would unscrew the wheel nut, they screw down onto the nut to turn it.

You can use them a few times before they mash the nut too.

Thanks guys, WD 40, heat, 23mm socket and a big hammer worked a treat.
