[Mk2] [Turbo] 5mm Spacers. Ok to use or not a good idea??

Post by GTSMick »

Hi all,

I've just bought some wheels and i've found out i'll most probably going to have to run a 5 mm spacers to clear my coilovers. I mainly do trackdays with my MR2 tubby and have heard varying ideas about using spacers on the front of the car. I.e it causing damage to wheel bearings and increasing the load on the wheel itself. I only intend to use a single 5mm spacer - the type that just fit over the 5 wheel studs and you place the wheel over and tighten as normal.

Any info or experiences of using spacers would be well recieved!

Thanks in advance

A track car will probably not do many miles or, more importantly, spend much time doing parallel parking manoevres etc so 5mm spacers probably won't cause much extra wear in the grand scheme of things.

5 mm is ok, as long as the center bore is still sitting on the hubs and it is 60.1mm

From the sound of you post, it sounds like its not a hubcentric spacer you'd be using. So I wouldn't. I'd spend the extra few quid & get hubcentric ones (has female bore tolocate on stock hub & male bore to locate on inside of wheel, keeping everything central proply.

Could you go as thin as 3mm? I've just had to fit 3mm spacers to my Tubby and it is surprising much less thread you have to play with once spacers are fitted. I wouldn't want to use anything larger than 3mm without fitting longer studs.
