Swerve @ 80 plus

I have not own my mk2 mr2 2l non turbo long, its a 94 reg.
The car had 12 sevice stamp. I sort a few things out to passed the mot.

Now the thing is, it's this problem; when @ 80mph plus,
on bend. Sometime the back end slide & shake!!!
Is that normal. Cause I never own a rear wheels drive before!
The car is lower with front/back stuct braces. I also have check
all the suspsion structers...& everythings is fine & solid!!

Has it got a standard spoiler on the back?

Mine used to dance around quite noticeably in cross-winds. It was quite scary until you got used to it.

Apparently the main function of the rear spoiler is to help the car deal with crosswinds and minimise the effect.
If you remove the rear spoiler (or replace it with an aftermarket one) it can magnify this problem.

Air flow underneath the car can also cause this kind of movement. Rev's 1 & 2 suffered with this but, IIRC, Rev3 onwards had dinky little flaps built into the front edge of the wheelarch liners which break up the air flow under the car and help stop it moving around.
If your car is a 94 model then it should be a Rev3 and have these flaps on it unless the wheelarch liners have been replaced.

Mine's been spoilerless for about 4 yrs and I've noticed no difference without it. Suspension & Geo are much more important.

I thought it was rev3 onwards.

Not sure where I got that idea though so it's likely I'm wrong.

At some point I'm going to try making some for myself.
I've heard people saying they do make a pretty big difference.

And they're supposed to help with front end stability at high speed - not the rear.

BACK TO THE TOPIC......................
Its not the spoiler (thats a daft suggestion)

I get a slight un-nerving wobble from the back end of the car on right hand bends on the motorway (never left hand!!) above 70mph.

For example, bumps and old roadowrks, pot holes, bumps crossing a change in surface (concrete to tarmac). Its almost like its about to fish tail, i suspected a shock had gone as it felt like the car would still bounce on a spring.

Its not the shocks, as it did this before and after my rear's where changed.

Its not the tryes or the tracking.

Im suspecting its something else suspention wise

Sounds like movement in the rear track control arm.

Could be the bushes or more likely the bolt that connects the track control arm to the subframe. (captive nut fails)

have you checked tyre pressures?

Also, how are the shocks?

Whilst the stiff springs make the "push the corner down" test hard to do, if you feel a bobbling or shuddering when accelerating hard, this points to worn shocks in my experience.


But most times my car's skitterish handling at speed has been down to tyre pressure and wheel alignment

I've never had it slide on a bend unless i've been doing something stupid with my right foot.

I agree with the tire pressure issue
but in this case if its the same as me its prompted by a bump in the road.

For me a sweeping left hand bend is fine, just this weekend i (cough) might have been going round the M25 and took a couple of left hand bends at 115mph

On right hand one's tho hitting one of our motorways many bumps at speed promps some bounce in the suspention, just for a fraction of a second, but its enough to make the back end feel incredibly light and make u mildly wee ur pants. But only going right.

Im pretty anal on tyre pressure, checking them every week. Also my shocks are months old, and it was doing this before and after

I dont know about this but i think it might be the closest to the right answer. Ill have to look further into it.

anyway is sorted now. I replaced a damadge rear o/s track bush, and its seem to do the trick
