Getting a replacement key

Post by Timsmr2 »

Got a bit of a problem I only have one key for my car (rev1 turbo) and yesturday it got slightly bent while trying to undo the box behind the drivers seat, it now feels a little flimsy.

So i thought i should get a couple of spares done as I didnt want this one snapping in the lock/ignition. Anyway went down trusty Timpsons and the guy did me a copy but was moaning about the fact the key was bent he tried redoing it a couple of times and i think he basically given up.

So called Toyota to see if they could get a replacement. They say if I fax them my log book they maybe able to get the details from Toyota Japan but if not they can supply me with a blank. Which I'm guessing will still leave me with the problem of getting the bent key cut.

Any ideas? or anyone had any experince with this?

Straighten it in a vice? Something that will apply pressure evenly and smoothly rather than bending it with your fingers, then just get it recut.

I'd say, take it to another key cutting place.

I've gone in there with 2 halfs of a key before and they managed to cut a copy, had to go back as the ignition barrell was worn away slightly but sorted that out quickly.

I bought a couple of them blanks from ebay with the gold toyota sign on them a couple of years ago and being meaning to get some copies done.

i never take my keys to Timpsons as they are useless.

I just get a key blank and cut it myself by hand, but then i was a locksmith :-)

We have had spare keys cut for 9 or 10 customers over the years.

If you have a full, original lock set, i.e. one key for all the locks, and you can be bothered, here goes:

Remove driver's door trim etc, remove door handle, remove lock. If you look at the barrel very closely, you'll find a number.

Down to local MrT, with VIN number, 5 digit model code off VIN plate, and barrel number, and MrT will order you a factory cut key that is a perfect match.

Cost about £8 IIRC.

I'm looking to get a 2nd key also, the one that Mr T sells you(vin and barrel no.) does it come with the button for unlocking central locking? (The key i have has the one button lock/unlock central locking.)
If not can you get one? and is it programmable from the ignition?

It's a plain key. I've never tried to get a replacement alarm fob key.

When I spoke to them they said that there were 3 keys available standard, with a transponder and another which i think they said had buttons for locking etc. So i imagine they can get them but they will be more expensive.

Standard blank was £10-12.
