Third Brake Light & Lower Fog Lamps

Post by trunks_mk1 »

Hello,

I have a third brake light that I want to wire up to the car, has anyone got experience doing this and whats the best way? any diagrams would be great. I have a led strip which is going on the inside cabin above the rear window. Only want it to come on when I brake, would I need to wire this to the rear brake lights or is there a closer point?

2nd thing I want to do is to wire in some front lower fog lamps but I would know how to wire this up. I can put in a switch oin the dash etc...but just unsure of the wiring and stuff on cars.

I can solder etc...and am fairly capable but just want to get it done proper first hand and from other peoples working experiences.

thanks!!!!

The third brake light just has to be spliced into the brake light circuit.

Fog lamps usually have relay so that they only operate with the sidelights on but you can connect them on a standalone circuit without any legal hassles I believe so long as they have a switch, preferably with a visual tell tale (e.g a switch that illuminates when they are on and the circuit is live).

It is a good idea to run them off the 12v ignition circuit rather than direct from the battery however so they go out when the ignition is switched off otherwise you could drain the battery if you somehow forgot to turn them off.

There may even ba a spare connector in the boot for the rear brake light, as the us and jap imports often had the mk1 brake light in spoiler, and wirinf was needed for this.

Brake light

you can splice into the the green and faint white stripe wire that is in the main loom on the firewall behind the passenger seat for the brake light,
lift up the carpet that covers the firewall, you could use a scotchlock to connect the red wire and earth the black wire I did this some time ago.
bill.
