Dodgy indicators

Hi,

Just sorting out my Mk1b to get through long overdue MOT and the indicators are playing up. Left or right indicators run at uneven (slow) speed, and the hazards just stay on constantly without blinking. Having read through the forums, this looks to me like the relay.

Is this the most likely culprit, and if so, is there a knack to getting to the relay (it seems to be buried up behind the dash somewhere...)?

Check all the earths for the lights first

It could well be your relay - I had a similar problem with my first MK1b so I replaced mine and everything worked fine again. I took some photos when I was doing it and posted it on this thread a while back, it's about two thirds down:

Thanks guys. They have started working again, which I can only put down to the fact that the car had been standing for months and had got rather damp inside, but has now been started and everything warmed up and dried out, so maybe that's done the relay some good...

PS anyone got a part number for the indicator relay? it's good when Toyota parts department tell me to go on the forums to check the part they are quoting...!!!

Hi all,

Know I'm dragging this out a little but Toyota wanting £50 for a flasher unit (81980-16010) and £20 for a indicator relay (90987-03001). I didn't know there were two different things! Any idea what the difference is and which might intermittently be causing the indicators to stay on and not flash? Don't want to spend £70 finding out!!

90987-03001 is for the hazards, BUT is only fitted to Euro spec LHD cars. When fitted it's in the fuse/relay box in the drivers footwell (centre relay of 3)
It's not fitted on UK cars, if you look at the fusebox you'll see 2 relays with a empty slot between them so you don't need that one.
I'm sure you can pick up a 2nd hand flasher unit a lot cheaper than £70, bound to be someone breaking a car on ebay or try the forums

Thanks for clarifying that. That's the one described in the Haynes manual I guess, that says changing it is a simple job! So to confirm, I need to get behind the dash to change the flasher unit?

nope, its in the front boot if I have the right one.

From what I can see from the Haynes manual, not checked BGB yet, that you don't need to remove the dash to get at anything. The flasher unit is just inside the driver;s door - check connections (Page 212 of the Manual states how) or you have the connector at the base of the steering column. No need to remove the dashboard though might have to remove the seat.

Haynes book is wrong, trust me, me it may be correct for a US spec car, but it certainly isn't for ours
I think people are confusing the extra Hazard relay that LHD cars have with the flasher unit which both LHD and RHD cars have.

Yes you do, the flasher unit is behind the dash almost inline and behind the lights switch

MartG, Jimbo_jet, Jimi, cartledge_uk, Tiamat, thanks for the advice (and discussion ) - nothing's ever simple on the Mk1 is it?!

Hopefully I've got one coming in the post (cheers Martin ) so hopefully that should sort it. When it works, the clicking can be heard directly behind the instrument panel, so here's hoping!!

relay received (thanks MartG ) and fitted in about an hour. Jimi's photos are pretty accurate and very helpful. It's on a long wire too, so have re-routed it to a lower position above the footwell incase I need to change it in the future.
