Worlds first 2gr-fe Mk1- Now running

Post by PW@Woodsport »

You guys appreciate a good Mk1 engine conversion so i thought i'd share pics of the worlds first 2gr-fe Aw11.... we are just at the hanging stage but its now fully mounted. It has taken one week from having the fire damaged 4a-ge in it to get to this stage, and the engine bay has needed to be massaged in a few areas to get the clearance. These engines are unbelievably powerful and pull like a train in the Mk2's we have built so god only knows what this will be like. (same engine as the lotus Evora has)

A view of the torque mounts, which have been substantially strengthened as has the chassis mounting points....

Ok not quite as radical as my Mk1 V8, but we expect this to pull tree stumps out :)

Nice one Paul :thumleft:

With 336Nm of torque I'm sure it'll accelerate pretty well [/understatement]

Holy Mackerel..! :thumleft:

You know, scanning the forums is great: you never know from month to month whats coming next.... :D

I reckon in 2014, Paul will post something like:

" Worlds first Rolls-Royce Merlin-engined Mk1!"

......but between now and then we've got twin-Busa's, Twin-turbo 2GR, V12, and possibly, Viper V10 engines to come........! :thumleft:

I'll get a huge tub of popcorn, and take my seat......... 8)

On one hand I'm delighted to hear that what with mine at relatively spring chicken like 125k miles! :D But on the other hand a blown 4AGE is a good excuses for the Missus for me to ship my car up to Durham \:D/ But i might have to wait for another 80,00 miles! #-o

Having said that my last one, a MK1b, snuffed it at 165,000 after the oil pump failed and I blew a big end at 85mph and 6000+ rpm. You can imagins the racket that made!! :pale:

The average snuff4age (see what i did there!) :) tends to occur sometime between 120k and 160k, but obviously there are many cars that exceed that.

One benefit is that these engines are fly by wire, so gets rid of the Mk1 cable problems forever :) Not that i'm condoning buying a 2gr just to cure a frayed cable.... although that might be a nice excuse for the missus! "damn dear the mk1 throttle cable's snapped, time for a 3.5ltr 300bhp v6..."

So what's next Paul? How about an uber-stripped out lightweight Mk1 with some sort of bike engine.... That sounds like fun! 8)

The next different Mk1 swap is a 2zz-ge powered one, coming in about 5 weeks time. That will be six speed as well.

I have to admit bike engines do nothing for me unless they are in something extremely light, and you can never get a mk1 light enough to make a bike engined one any good. Just not enough torque in them to haul a mk1 off the mark. I think you'd need to spaceframe one and use carbon panels everywhere to get on par with the v6 or turbo mk1's.

This same 2gr-fe engine we just installed into a mk2 just made the following numbers... 325bhp and 285 lbs.ft of torque. The lower two graphs are of the previous 3vz-fe V6 overlaid for comparison.

So in a mk1 it should be "Warp factor 8 Mr Sulu, engage!"

how much are 2GR-FEs? it looks like Toyota fitted them to everything they built for America, so should be quite available?

Yeah, they come in a few motors in America. Not cheap though given how new they are.

To give you an idea

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/2007-201 ... ccessories

Then $800 shipping, and import duty and VAT.

You also need custom exhaust manifolds, an engine mounting kit, bespoke coolant housing, fidanza flywheel, uprated clutch kit and the DBW pedal assembly with its plug and wiring, ECU with the body plugs and transponder ECU as well. These items may not be there on an Ebay engine which is why we use a dedicated US supplier who supplies the complete package with everything you need as part of a group buy over on TB. This massively cuts down on import duty as well and the VAT is shared.

Is there a ballpark figure for a roll in roll out conversion on a Mk2?
