NA MR2 v Seat Cupra R - Place your bets...

Post by Snelly »

I have (as you know from looking at my garage) a NA rev2 t-bar MR2 with scorpion decat SS and a k&n. A collegue at work has a standard 150bhp diesel Seat Cupra R. As road racing is highly illegal, we can't put them up against eachother.... but what do you recon would win a straight drag race? The Cupra has plenty of torque and is light... but slightly less BHP. 0-62 mph in the cupra takes 8.6 seconds (according to the Seat website).

Just wondered if i'd face even a remote chance of keeping up...? [-X

Borrowed one of the salesman's cupra diesels at work the other day, seriously fast piece of kit, the turbo starts whistling almost immediately and that thing flew, seriously impressed with it, had no idea it would be that fast for a diesel, certainly felt a lot faster than those figures suggest. Good luck to you mate but don't feel bad if he wins.

If you beat him, he will only go and by a proper Cupra R (non diesel 225bhp)

If I was given the option of driving either in a race I'd opt for the Cupra to be honest.

CUPRA : 210 lb-ft Torque
MR2 MK2 NA : 140 lb-ft Torque
MR2 TURBO : 200 lb-ft Torque

Cupra would win against an NA but not a turbo
if the cupra was shipped, then slight modifications
would eat the cupra :D

0-60 would get you there faster, but defenitly NOT from rolling starts and not on higher speeds.

i drive a '91 3S-GE, my uncle has a 4wd cupra 1.9TDI 150 and to 60 i am a full second faster, after that, he pulls hard on me....fast!

from a rolling start , there's no question, i can't beat him! ever.

Not really. Diesels always have WAY more torque than horsepower, TD's even more so. 210lb/ft sounds about right.

Id say the NA will win from standing. From rolling however is a different story.... unless you drop a few gears ;) then you will have the edge there too

I gave up a td A3 (which is basically the same engine) for my rev3 n/a, and off the line you will pull ahead (thanks to the gearing of the diesel) but you wont stay ahead for long. Modern diesels are not the sluggish oil burners they used to be, and if there is a hill involved your in trouble! My advice is get in front first and do everything you can to keep him behind you, its not sporting but hey.......

It doesent rev very high, power is a function of torque and revs.
