[Mk2] [Turbo] HELP! Break Down today 14:00

Post by CritCare »

I was driving along today on my way to work and sweeping right through a round-about before entering a motorway i heard a 'clicking' sound thenn a big 'glunk' from the drivers rear area. i pulled over on to layby and checked under the car. There didnt seem to anything out of place or obstructing so i drove very slowly forward in the layby and again the clicking then a big glunk happened, i then did it in reverse and the same again.

I called a friend who came out and looked under and spotted something i did not. He seen that where the driveshaft come out of the box on the drivers rear, there seemed to be a bolt missing from what looks like a bracket surrounding the driveshaft ( ill get photos but im in work now on-call for nicu so ill not be home for a while). this area was also covered in black oil. he said he saw somwthing hanging down which when the rotated, it hit off the surrounding metal...i did not see this but i only had a quick look.

i managed to get the car home the 1 mile distance in second gear going about 5mph, with the clicking noise but no glunk sound.

i was getting the clutch changed on tuesday but looks like thats not happening now, although it would prob be the best time to sort this!

any ideas?

I think a photo is going to be your best bet.

Judging by what you've said, it sounds like the support bracket has come loose, allowing the driveshaft to pop out, but that's by no means a deffinate answer.

Thanks, i havent got a photo yet as it was dark when i got home last night and i have no torch (maplins today!!)

the bolt that is missing is the left hand side one of the two black bolts on the driveshaft in this picture.

i will get an actual real picture today.

Right, think that helps a little.

Those bolts effectively hold the driveshaft together. My guessing is that you've probably lost more than one or they've all come loose. Get a/some new ones in and tighten the rest up and I "think" you should be ok.

I'm sure someone else had this issue, and not too long ago either. I'll have a search and see what turns up....

Edit: Can't find the exact thread, but this one is kinda close;

thanks dude.

there is a real crunch when the wheel rotates....sounds horrible.

Its being picked up tomorrow and brought to a mach for the clutch change planned for today. Changing the clutch will actually give better access to this prob.

Ill update, with the fix.
