water temp question??

Post by DavesMr2turbo »

hi all

I think i got a problem somewhere or can someone explain this to me.

Once i start my car up and running from the morning. its little hesitating. once the car idled and totally warmed up. It runs more or less prefect with the water temp half way.Once i drive the car around for a little while the water temps starts going down to like cold zone then the feels a little hesitating again.

My mates mr2 Turbo rev 3 once warmed up stays about half way and dont move.

why mine move up and down.???

Hi Dave, it's more than likely that your thermostat has packed up and is stuck in the open position.

I'm having the same problem at the moment. It's a fairly easy job to replace, just a bu88er to make sure you don't get any airlocks in the system whn you refill it.

Yep that either points to thermostat or airlock. Unless you're losing coolant?

Just replaced the rad and thermostat on my n/a. Got given these two links which were most helpful...

http://www.mrtwo.net/mr2modproject/serv ... flush1.htm

http://www.mr2-tech.com/bgb/mechanical/ ... stem/3.htm

I got a thermostat from local autoparts place for £13 but did read that some people have had problems with non toyota thermostats. For me though- car is happy again and for the cost and the time it takes to change it i was willing to take a gamble.

anyone else.

if i bleed the system and change thermostat asap. will it make the temp guage stay at half way. rather then going to cold on long drives then cars thinks its on choke and starts sputtering and hestating.

what everyone think. also gonna change the ecu temp sensor?

cheers

Follow the bleed procedure to the letter. Here's another link for you:

http://www.mr2-tech.com/bgb/mechanical/ ... stem/3.htm

Replace the coolant sensor while the coolant is empty.

Remember to replace the crush washer on the sensor as well.

Locate the pipes you attach to the front bleed points before you drain the coolant, you don't want to have to get a bus to homebase once you've drained the coolant.

For the week following bleeding check the coolant level daily and top up when required.

Empty and refill the expansion tank - this is easier if you take it out of the engine bay as it has got min/max marks on it. It will be full of old coolant at the moment and the last thing you want to do is have the engine suck in old coolant when it breathes.

Can't think of anything else off the top of my head...

I'd bet money on it being your thermostat.

I had exactly the same symptoms up until a couple of weeks ago, changed my thermostat and coolant and its been rock solid since.

You'll need coolant too. When you change the thermostat it'll dump loads of coolant out.

If the gauge on the dash moves then there is no need to replace the temp sender. As others have said i would bet changing the thermostat will solve the problem. Did for me anyway.

Gauge on the dash isn't driven by the same temp sender as the ECU. An awful lot of people are finding that their ECU temp senders are broken in the recent spat of cold weather so why not replace it while you're in there, it's not like it's expensive.

They both go in the coolant neck next to the distributor. ECU one is the one facing the cabin and the dash gauge sender is the one facing the boot IIRC.

Coolant neck was revised rev2-rev3 though as the rev1/2 has a cold start sender in there as well.

I'd only say the thermostat because of a problem on a previous car, hope you get it sorted mate
