I thought you lot knew about driving a car smoothly to make it quick?

Look at the way the rev counter falls between gear changes.

I've no doubt it's a damn quick car but that video is 100% sped up.

Olie mate....yer wrong :D

the framerate and vid quality might be tricking you into thinking it's been sped-up but I'm sure it hasn't.

Compare it to his other video i posted and you'll see what i mean. Like i said, it could just be down to vid compression or whatever but it looks sped up.

Would like to see some more of it too. :)

I think it's just the frame-rate on the recording.

Damn thats light. My car which was built for Rallycross weighed in at 800 kgs, but I had fibre glass panels and it was front space framed, with perspex windows etc.

Can't really decided either way if its sped up, but that does look good fun.

Mk1 MR2 Hillclimb

Post by fishhead404040 »

I am glad you enjoyed my video, but what on earth makes anyone think this is sped up is beyond me. The video is 100% as-recorded i.e NOT sped up. I don't even know how to do that. This video is typical of a tarmac hillclimb event in New Zealand.

To verifying the playback speed, I suggest you make a simple comparison of the video run time (from start to finish beams), versus the published results.
Note also that the audio and video match. If the Audio was sped up our voices would sound like chipmunks and the car would sound like an F1!

It only looks fast because the road is really narrow and the surrounding landscape is so close. The car is very firmly sprung, and thus rides very roughly. It has a non-powered Quaife quick rack so steering response is fast and easy at speed. We are also only using 1st, 2nd and 3rd gears and they are not even close-ratio. There is a normal time between gear changes. Speeds are not high. Like I said in the video detail, 0-105kph in 5.4 sec takes us to 8000rpm in second gear and is by no means extraordinary.

The stage time is described in each video detail, and Results are here to compare: www.taranakicarclub.org.nz Look up results for Mana Road 2009.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=po9yKf8X9UA 1min 38s unofficial

The official event Winner was Mr Sole in a faster LS3-powered Batman RX7 with 350rwkw+. He had traction problems on this tight course.

Compare the same road in 2008 (with a slightly shorter course at the end) in my other softly sprung car at similar speed:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vJPJ3waiaO0 about 1 min 31 or 32sec
Note how the video recorder is set lower so you see less road and how much slower this looks because of this .....

The MR2 did indeed look slow and go slow at Stratford 2009 because it had boost problems: the inlet manifold was split and did not hold a lot of pressure, and so response was poor until the revs rose, and the ECU was causing a misfire. The road was also twice as wide.

I never doubted it for a second, just goes to show how fast they are if the videos look sped up :thumleft:

Good to know it's not sped up even when it does look it. My comment was aimed at the fact the video looked sped up and why do that, not that your car wasn't as fast as implied..

Looks like a cracking build and that's a proper power to weight ratio you're working with. Props to you.

Any external videos of the car on the move?
