Insurance trouble

Post by dantheman »

What i want to do is ensure my MR2 Turbo for driving to and from a track only. im not concerned about the track time itself, and most of the year it will be in a car park not being used. so i need some sort of temporary cover, not a 12 month policy.

now heres the killer: im 20 years old and i have no no-claims unless im with direct line, where i have 3 years no claims.

has anyone been in a similar situation, know of any company willing to give me some cover, or have a solution to my problem. im not gonna buy a 4x4 and a trailer when the car is road legal, and im not gonna pay £3500 to insure a £2100 car for a maximum of 10 days a year

any ideas?

hi,cheapest solution imo, would be to buy a towing frame, and a suitable car, that you would be prepared to use on a daily basis.other than that find someone who would be prepared to transport your car to the track,at a reasonable cost, perhaps a mate who would also be interested in the track side of things.paul.

could you insure the car for just the day, if the cars parked off the road that is.

I had this same problem last week. In the end elephant (my car unsurance company) gave me temporary cover for 2 weeks. Cost £28 i think. I already have my daily runabout insured with them. Other companies were asking £150 !!

Might just be worth ringing direct line and ask them if they'll do you temporary insurance on an additional car (the mr2).

Cheers

Competition car insurance in Nottingham do a very limited mileage cover for to and from trackdays. Might be worth a call.

But I found it easier to just insure for a whole year as a low mileage road car + mods with a performance orientated insurer. Ie Adrian Flux, Greenflag or my current insurers A-Plan.

I used to trailer my first car and it was a faff to have tto trailer to every event. Plus you couldn't take it out on the road for a brief shakedown to check your latest suspension settings, or run in a new set of brakes.

But don't go paying 3500 to direct line, they're assuming its a 12k a year road car and charging you accordingly.

ill answer these in order.

-i already have a daily car, its a 1.9L petrol BMW 3 series. i looked it up and it up and it can tow 1600kg braked and 720 unbraked towing weight. i have no idea what either of those mean as ive never towed anything before, but any advice on it and i will definitely consider it

-ecarinsure wont cover me as im under 25

-ive already phoned direct line, they wont cover a 20 year old on a group 16 insurance car, even if i am already with them.

-i havent actualy looked into limited milage, i will look into it now

-already tried competition car insurance, they said they only cover competitions and because i dont have a race license they arent interested. i tried adrian flux, they gave me the 3500 quote,

How old is the car? You could try a classic car insurance if its over 10 years old on a limited mileage.

Why not get a race license? It's what all the cool guys are doing...

From an insurance perspective, unfortunately claims stats for under 21 year olds on MR2 Turbos are horrendous.. The fact is, you will be driving the car on the road so the insurers will ask for an insurance premium which represents the risk to them for insuring you. The figures you are getting represents the risk that you present.
If you can't see the angle, you're in trouble.

Other than trailering it then it makes financial sense to get a race licence!

£300 plus medical for the licence. Depends what the insurance is with a licence.

Given your age you'll probably need an additional test to allow you to tow it on a trailer

Just thought id post my findings

2 companies stood out to be the best. Adrian flux are the industries go to guys for this kind of insurance. they gave me a quote of £3500 third party onlywith i think 2k miles limit.

but the standout winners by a country mile was competition car insurance. when i tried them the 1st time they just said we wont insure under 21's on the most appropriate policy, and the car is not a competition vehicle so they cant cover it. i tried them again and spoke to their specialist, jennifer. she gave me a quote for 1000 miles third party only of £904. to upgrade for TPFT it was £1360, or to add an extra 1000 miles it was £1160. the reason they were so cheap is they can mirror no claims bonus.

so there we have it, competition car insurance, and dont take no for an answer.

There we go, thought they'd be the best company for you.
Shame you got crappy info the first time round. Worked out ok in the end tho.

Another good ploy with insurance companies is to narrow down to the best 2, and then play them off against each other to knock an extra 50/100 quid off the best quote. Although with you being what they could consider a "high risk" age + car combo, you might have to wait a couple of years before that works.

you said your BMW can tow 1600kg on a braked trailer. Your sorted then. Towbar on the BM and hire a car trailer that has brakes on it.

Simples.
