End of the line for my mk1

Post by JMR_AW11 »

Hi
I'm about to scrap my blue mk1b so can anyone offer advice how to go about this?

I've never scrapped a car before so do I just google the nearest scrapyard?

What £££ will I get for it? I want them to collect etc.

I've not read the registration doc yet but I assume there's a section I have to fill out to declare it scrapped?

Also, it's currently SORNed, so do I have to declare it scrapped to the SORN 'police' (to avoid a fine etc)

Thanks in advance :)

BTW I've still got a shiny red mk1b so I won't be without an MR2 :D

just phone around your local scrappy, and ask them to collect it and weigh it in, you'l maybe see 75-110 i guess, take anything you need off it fiirst and if you want the wheels as spares, arrange to collect them from the yard once cars been taken.

i think you need to prove ownership, v5 etc.

I'm near Cheltenham but I want the whole car to go, so I'm not looking to break it and sell spares.

Basically it needs two new front wings and the front of the sills are rusting so I reckon it will need quite a bit of welding if the door skirts were removed etc. It does have a good engine and gearbox (96k miles) and the interior is good too. But I think I'd rather scrap it as I wouldn't want to sell it to a new owner if the chassis turns out to be rotten.

JMR - I have a mate who is looking for a donor mk1 for one of his friends - the chap isnt interested in the condition of the shell, he just wants various components off the car and will come collect, and give you the scrap money for it (will leave you to negotiate).

Drop me your number by PM and I will pass it onto him so he can give you a call.

Cheers

Hang on guys, just to clarify.
My plan for this car is to take quite a few electrical and trim spares off it as backup for my other mk1 and then scrap it.

In recent months I've had offers locally from private individuals (usually posted through the door) for the whole car but I'd rather have the good spares from it and scrap it.

The chassis really is rusty all round.
The front wings have huge holes/gashes as I can peel the corroded metal away in big fragments. The front part of the sills looks pretty bad too. Also, the tyres and brakes etc will be in poor shape through lack of use.

I really don't want to sell this car privately because it really is in poor condition chassis wise. Also, it needs to be gone fairly soon as I've bought another car. I really just want advice on how to scrap it and not get burnt due to SORN issues etc.

My advice is to find a better car than this one to salvage... :(

JMR_AW11, having disposed of a vehicle at the beginning of August, if they come to collect you can usually expect to receive either no payment or a token payment of say upto £30. Especially if it has been stripped. You will struggle to get £75+ from a collection if you taken most of the decent parts off it. Check with the local breakers first. Chris (Oukie) is a top guy and will alsways find a use for a MK1, I know I have seen his shed of parts! Pity its not an autotragic MK1 as I am on the look out for one, even a rsuty one since I am going to rip all the bodywork off.
I am going to live forever, or die trying!

Fair enough if thats what you wanna do but I was interested in whole car anyway.

As for scrapping it you dont even need the v5, as the scrap man will take all your details and if something comes of it when they input the vechile details they have your information anyway. I have scrapped a mk1 that had no V5 in this very mannor.

The best money I have had from weighing a mk1 in was GBP 76 , This was a stripped car but still had some interiour and the engine (fubared) in it, But this was me taking it to them.

What bits are you looking for? I've still got several items of Mica blue bodywork taking up space in the garage.

Seems daft to scrap a car when someone is willing to take it off your hands and break it for spares. As Malc says the car is worthless, you will be lucky to get for £30 it.

Too right. Makes no sense. Unless you are keeping everything bar the shell.

A friend recently scrapped a Peugeot 306, getting a decent price when he weighed it in due to the large concrete slabs in the spare wheel well.... [-X

Pah, I managed to sell myself for scrap a while back when I weighed a car in.

Drove onto the weighbridge with me, driver, tow car, trailer and stuff to scrap. Drove off, unloaded the scrap, driver drove the tow car and trailer back onto the weighbridge whilst I stood and watched hoping they wouldn't cotton on
