[Mk2] [Turbo] Smelly Aircon

Post by Debs »

Hi,

Don't know if anyone can help me but my aircon is really smelly. It's a horrible damp smell and if I leave it a while it mists up the windows. I have bought an aircon cleaning kit from Halfords and that made it smell nice for a few days but thats it. I have heard that if the vent pipe is blocked, water will sit in it and cause the smell/mist. Any ideas on were the vent line is so that I can blow it through? I also suspect this as I don't get a puddle of water on the floor if I leave it running. If anyone else has any ideas I'd love to hear them.
Thanks :thumleft:

You can get a gas canister thing that you set off in your car and set the air con to re-circulate with all the windows closed.

Leave it for 15 mins and it should be good to roll :thumleft:

Try and use the air con at least 10 minutes a week if not more, otherwise bacteria will grow in the filters and you'll get the smell again.

Here's what your looking for :thumleft:

I used something similar in my old car a few years ago and I was extremly impressed!

That's what I bought from Halfords. It made it smell nice but that's about it :( The horrible smell iscoming back which makes me think I have a blocked vent somewhere.

I'd take it to a specialist.

Did you leave it running with it set to re-circulate with all windows and doors closed?

It should've worked.

How about the gas levels, are they ok? Might be worth topping that up then trying again.

Im sure there are places that specifically deal with this stuff. Yell.com :thumleft:

Yep, had it on recirulate with windows shut. It's weird because the temp gets really really cold...it just smells :( It is better since I bought the kit but it's still a bit smelly :? The reason I think it could be a blocked vent is cuz a guy I work with had the same problem with his car and the aircon people said it was the vent...seemed to sort his out. I just don't know where it is lol. I think I probably should give the aircon guys a ring. Thanks for your help tho :D

Was it a specialist aircon place that quoted you? The trouble is, where I work I have the use of a workshop so I'd like to try and save some cash and sort it myself. I should probably just ring the aircon people n ask them what to do.

the cause of the smell is bacteria biuld upon the evaporator, toyota sell a kit that is a can with a tube on it :thumleft:
we have used the gas bombs in the past these do not work as it only freshens the air in the car, the can with the tube is good the main prob normally is that people put it into the air vents which is ok but you need to stick it up in side the drain tube from under the car as the bacteria grows on the under side of the evaporator ,you do this you will have a nice smelling car normally i re do mine once a year :thumleft:
