Isn't the steering electric?

Are you sure you are not meaning the clutch fluid? In which case brake fluid will suffice, although a loss of fluid would suggest a leak somewhere.

The power steering fluid is pumped round via an electric pump rather than a belt-driven pump (the problem with the belt-driven approach should be obvious). Toyota call it the EHPS system - Electro-Hydraulic Power Steering. See http://www.mr2-tech.com/bgb/mechanical/ ... ring/5.htm

The power steering fluid you're after is the gold kind! It should be gold unless someone's replaced it in the past. Pop the cap off and see what colour it is.

Just an update on this. Just bought 1 litre of Power Steering Fluid from Toyota, part number T08886-80807 for £8.23 inc VAT.

I questioned two of Mr T's staff that this was for the Electro Hydraulic Power Steering and they both assured me it was. The tin is clearly labelled Automatic Transmission Fluid WS.

Don't suppose they can be mixed?

Is Peugeot the gold stuff?

TBH it sounds more like normal power steering fluid you got there.

I recently used Castrol Dextron III for a car with 'normal' power steering, that was labelled as 'automatic transmission fluid', and was red.

You obviously didn't read the third post in this thread?................
the correct part no. from the BGB is quoted by Toxo in the third post in this thread.

The part no. you quoted is different, hence you've ended up with the wrong product.

Now get down to Peugeot and pick up their "gold" EHPS fluid for £8 :thumleft:

You are right Razor I did not read Toxo's entry thoroughly and hence I did not quote the part number.

What I explicitly questioned them about was given the year and model of my vehicle, that what they were providing me with was the "Electro Hydraulic Power Steering Fluid" and they both assured me it was.

I have since gone back to them and provided them with the part number (many thanks ) above and they have ordered some for me at £28 for 1 litre. I will collect it on Saturday and look forward to hearing their excuses. I wonder if I get it FOC along with refund on the opened tin?

The reason why I went for the Toyota stuff over the Pug was for piece of mind, but thanks for providing me with an option.

my local Peugeot are out of stock and toyota need to order the gold type and cost £30

So have anyone just decided to top up there power steering by mixing the red stuff with the gold?

I wouldn't advise it. The power steering fluid gets put under a lot of pressure (extended durations of full lock will quite happily boil it) and mixing different fluids is never a good idea in cars. The last thing you'd want is for them to congeal (which is what happens when you mix different types of coolant) and seize your steering rack.
