Has anyone run full slicks?

Post by pekwah1 »

Hi Guys,

I'm looking to do a trackday in June/July at Bedford.
I've been offered some full slicks in the right sizes at a good price...

Just wondered if anyone's run on slicks on a mk2?
I'm probably going to buy them to see what they're like!

Just need to increase the size of my boot somehow to get them up there......!

I think that some companies demand roll over protection if you are running full slicks .

Only driven full slicks on a mk3 and they were a massive step up from trackday tyres such as the Toyo R888. They need to be treated with respect though, and expect them to quickly point out to you any weaknesses in your suspension or wheel bearings...

A Standard Mk2 on Road or trakday special tyres is fine, but if you're going for full slicks you can generate a lot more lateral force - I'd be concerned about oil starvation of the engine , as well as the extra load on wheel bearings and brakes.

I'd say don't bother as you don't get any additional enjoyment- and on slicks the car will be a lot less forgiving if you get it out of shape than on road tyres.

I seem to remember System-g mentioning that BAT wouldn't allow slicks without a full rollcage and some other criteria.

Would probably be advisable to speak to the organiser to make sure 1st :thumleft:

No you WILL be required to have full rollover protection if you are doing a organised trackday through companies like trackdays.co.uk etc.

You could probably get away with it if you are cheeky. Just don't be surprised if you get kicked off the circuit as the organisers will not be insured for that.

Current MSA/FIA approved roll-over is mandatory if you're using slicks on a track day run by a member of ATDO :thumleft:

If you go to a test day, you will be allowed to run slicks

But.... you may not be able to do the test day on a std driving license.

You'll need a race license and your car must be prepared to MSA standards for a test day.

MSA sprints have a std road going class, and a MSA sprint lisence is £35 and no test is needed  (but you cant run slicks in that class, 1a tyres only)

Easy access trackdays for some people

I've run on slicks but only on a Mk1 :thumleft: we even used to cut our own groves for the wet. I must admit that was in a modded 180bhp and full rollcage car. If you're got the power then use them, but check with the organisors beforehand.

I've still got a set of old slicks, you're now got me thinking :-k

I've run slicks at several airfield days.
rev2 turbo with minor mods (+30BHP)
No rollcage requests but best check with the organiser.
I was very concerned about the extra Gs causing oil starvation but couldn't upset the engine despite my best efforts, all has remained healthy. had it for 9 years now with a couple of trackdays a year
