Tapping a hole in the sub-frame

Post by Shmed »

I have managed to shaft one of the threaded holes in the rear sub-frame (the one that holds the lower suspension arm to the sub-frame) and wondered if anyone might know what thread tap I need, and if there is anything else I could do? I have only mashed the first thread or so so the bolt won't bite.

Having looked atthe bolt, it seems to be an M14 x 1.5 thread. Can I just run a tap through the first couple of threads? I don't want to have to replace the sub-frame.

I can't see why not. You would be better running the tap all the way through to make sure all the thread is clear.

I was just a bit concerned that I might land up with no thread at all if I were to cut the wrong thread.

Can you get the tap in at the good end of the captive nut? Then the tap will follow the good threads and straighten up the few knackered ones. :-k

That was my first hope, but such is life, no I cant. I must remember that when a bolt doesn't bite, it is because it isn't lined up, not that it needs 'persuading' with a hammer
